I emailed this company two years ago and they verified that they were Jehovah's Witnesses. They mentioned that some of the proceeds from the sale of these jewelry items, went to help the Watchtower's worldwide preaching work. Selling the Watchtower logo. Guardian photo by Teresa Wright Constable People in the Stratford area have probably noticed a new building that seemingly sprang up overnight behind the Sobeys store.
The building is a new Jehovah’s Witness temple, and congregation members from across the Maritimes were hard at work in the lot just behind the Stratford grocery store helping to build the new temple for the local congregation.
The project is part of a mission the church has adopted to help fellow Jehovah’s Witness members with construction and renovation work. The church group operates a training program for trades that allows members to learn a skilled trade while also practising the virtue of charity.Peter Stroud, who works on the church’s regional building committee, said they put on seminars so volunteers get hands-on training in practical trades such as brick-laying and plumbing.
“You know what it’s like — skilled labour is hard to come by in the Maritimes. So we actually train the volunteers in a particular trade.”
Congregation members in the region who want to volunteer fill out a questionnaire detailing their construction abilities. Those with no experience are placed on a team with a project overseer and are shown on-site how the job is done.
“For instance, there were young ladies on our site laying brick,” Stroud said. “They had a ‘T’ on their hard hat meaning they were in training.”
The construction team of volunteers and trainees from across the region travel around the Maritimes working on flash projects like the one in Stratford.
“We usually do them in three days. It’s just nice to see a project start and finish rather than have it drag on forever.”
Construction of the Stratford temple began on Oct. 12. In only a week, the outside of the building was all but complete.
About 250 people from Jehovah’s Witness congregations across the Maritimes helped in construction.
Neighbours in the surrounding area were astounded by the quick progress.
Others were curious about how so many people working in such close quarters could get along without struggle.
When one of the women working on the temple went to the hardware store for supplies, a local contractor saw her, noticing the ring around her head from her hard hat.
“Are you on the project?” he asked. “I don’t know how you can do it. I can’t take more than three people working on a project.”
He couldn’t believe there were 250 people co-operating on one project, Stroud said.
“Sometimes trades don’t jive. But we work together — whether it’s plumbers or electricians or chip rockers. The trades don’t fight with one another, we all work in harmony.”
This captures the essence of why his congregation continues to tackle these projects, he said.
“We’re doing this for love for our God and love for our brothers and sisters. It might sound a little corny but that’s exactly what it is.”
Interior decorators put the finishing touches on the temple this week. The first service will be held in the church this Sunday at 10 a.m. Cheers! Atlantis- -
