Thank you CoffeeBlack for posting that.
I did a google search myself on drug induced schizophrenia and there were 1,790 hits. It also seems that there is much debate about the full causes, even within the medical community.

avishai ... trauma and abuse can change the brain. That's been recognized by car accidents.
Birth trauma often causes cerebral palsy, which is a brain disorder ... due to lack of oxygen either before, during or after birth. There is no cure. The main and sad part of cp is that often the mental powers are normal or above but the body stiffens and is drawn inward. The opposite can happen and the muscles loosen.
These patients are not considered schizophrenic though.

The debate is whether illicit drug use can cause it, or exacerbates it. A large percentage of schizophrenic (but not all) have a history of drug use. It certainly doesn't help it.
It generally manifests in women later in life, as far as into the late 30's. I've always thought Andrea Yates, who was very bright and had no history of drug use, was a very tragic example of that. (and most people with schizophrenia will never get to the point of Andrea Yates) Most are able to manage their symptoms very well, as has been pointed out.

Exactly Emy, my point was that it is not something cut dry that you are born with, and that there is still much debate even within the medical community.
No problem Avishai, we were posting so close together that it was bound to happen. -

some of the factors I see involved in causing (depression..that leads to suicide; neurosis; schizophrenia, etc.) is:
intense alienation from the outside world and thus living already in a fantasy world made up by doctrine...
unquestioning committment, and thus not allowed to have even privacy of doubts....
and the hardest part is when for some reason, you come to your senses and have a breakthrough...
(this is my own example of what happened to a friend...you are told bizarre hurtful things "you will never see your dead sister or your mother again" and "Jah will abandon you" and "it would be better if you die now" because if you get killed off at Armageddon SOON...you won't get a resurrection!)
the manipulation and mind control at the point of departure is so very severe. And then the isolation from your family and friends if you exit. Your whole life support system is cut off.
This is why I think this type of trauma spawns the mental reactions.
I wish there was some evidence to prove its the exit that causes so much of the mental illness.
Anybody have a suggestion?
I am thinking that even in an individual case where these things have sent someone over the edge and this is the exclusive purpose of their therapy...and especially if it could be proven there are great numbers of such individuals...that there could possibly be some repercussion and responsibility that could be forced upon wbts by medical industry(?)

We would need to find out if these patients were born-ins or converts and if their schizophrenia predates their JW involvement. If we dont then we could end up peeing in the wind so to speak.

bottom line:
The JW religion/sect/cult or however you classify contributes negatively to ones mental well being.
Why is this?
- Judgemental Culture
- Belief in a mass murderer as God
- vascilating teachings
A friend's daughter committed suicide because she "did not fit in" at school. I wonder what lead to her feeling that she did not fit in?
This makes me angry.
Senseless loss of life.... It must stop.

Tula,
I wish it was possible, but I don't think the wt will ever take responsibility or admit liability. They always blame the rank and file. We all understand the pain...and some are more fragile than others... and some experience unbelievable cruelty at the hands of elders and family. If there was a way to hold them responsible for the damage they cause, I'd be all for it...
When they changed their policy regarding organ transplants two years after my dad died of kidney failure I was numb...and it took me years to face that issue. When I finally left the watchtower I explored the possibility of taking legal action. I was told by attorneys that it would be nearly imposssible to win a lawsuit...because we hold religious freedom so dear... and my dad was in the organization by choice.... So there you have it...
