Yes it is quite the dilemma.
As I look into the purpose of Genesis itself I see less and less of a fundamentalists perspective. The main thrust of the genealogies are to link up the divine creation and purpose of the cosmos with the Jews (i.e. Abraham) and not necessarily to relate an accurate account of history. To my knowledge the Jews never particularly believed the stories where 'true' in the most exact sense, even though they believed them to be 100% inspired of God.
Modern fundamentalists (like JWs and evangelicals) make the two issues mutually exclusive. In most cases I think it has to do with their desire to 'reject' the world as well as be controversial. -
