I'm so sorry Big D. Just tell the kids to keep quiet, that what you all did last night, having lots of family fun, was pagan, demonic, and now your family is probably possessed. If they don't want to die at Armageddon, and fall into the big crevasse, just like the one in the orange Paradise book, they won't say a word.

    or

Just go with the flow, and keep shoveling in that pie.

When my daughter was about 9, she went with my JW (not hard core) sister, to visit my parents. All I told her was, take off the cross necklace. That's it. She didn't. My mom just told her, that it wasn't what WE believed. LOL

I don't want (nor mean to) come down as too hard on you, but I have to wonder WHY you would take your nine-year-old kids out to Trick or Treat on Halloween and THEN shortly after, take them to a family dinner where they will be expected to keep quiet about it! Isn't this going to send very mixed messages to them on "what pleases God", etc? (Or at least cause some relatives to say some very unkind things to these little ones!)

Most kids that age are bubbling over with excitement about what they were dressed up as, and so forth (ESPECIALLY if this was their first experience)....and to expect them to be silent on all this...kind of baffles me. Unless I am reading this wrong, you are placing THEM in a very awkward and uncomfortable situation.

Either you are "in" or you are not. This will cause a lot of unnecessary discomfort for everyone involved. I hate to ask you "what are you thinking"....but it HAS crossed my mind.

My kids, 12 & 9, went trick or treating last night too for the first time. We have had decorations up for weeks and haven't said anything to our families either. I think that it is you and your kids' business. What you do is between you and them and God, if you believe in him. That was part of why I left, to be able to make decisions as a family w/out 12 old men's opinions.

I'm not advocating lying, just don't explain until they ask. Then you can choose what to say. Your kids can do the same. They should be able to share a fun experience with their family, but we all know how far that will fly in a JW crowd. Maybe you can be the one to answer the questions. I always tell mine if they feel uncomfortable, just tell that person to talk to me. It is too big of a burden for little ones to carry.

Good luck at dinner-eat some for me!

Instead of you squirming, make them squirm. Have the children dress up in their costumes, ring the bell and when the relatives come to the door say "trick or treat" and then "November (April) Fools!!! At the supper table talk about how hungry you are for turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. That should break the ice for everyone

A couple of years ago my parents and sister came out to visit for a few days and Halloween happened to fall within those days. I let my kids go trick-or-treating while my parents were visiting? Hell yeah! I got the kids dressed up right in front of my parents and I took them out. Parents sitting in my house the whole time. Did they like it? Nope, but this is my house and my kids and they couldn't do a darn thing about it.
