Watching the Democratic debates I was struck how every candidate, save Dennis Kucinich, pledged to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Iran is a sovereign state, diplomacy which ends in 'you can't have this, but we can' will not work. What would happen if another country told us we couldn't have nukes?

Iran's president has many times spoke of destroying Isreal and bringing on armagedon. He is an Islamic fundementalist with very psychotic idea's. It's not just the US that does not want Iran to have nukes, it's most of the world. Many country's have nukes but we don't see them making insane threats of using them to wipe out an entire country for religious and ethnic reasons.

Yes, but does the USA have the authority to tell another nation what they can and cannot do?

It's the UN that is demanding inspections to make sure the enrichment is not for weapons grade plutonium, not the US. Unfortunately the US would be used to enforce any UN resolutions.
