    Try MRE's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meal%2C_Ready-to-Eat

Dispite what it says about the taste, I have eaten several and they are definately better than your average microwave dinner.

They are pretty cheap, but you'll probably have to buy them in bulk. (But if you're stockpiling food that shouldn't be a problem right?)

And they will last at LEAST 3.5 years.

Hint : something you will eat anyway!

So you don't really stockpile. You buy more of the nonperisable food than you would normaly eat then just keep a head of it replacing what you eat. No more than a weeks worth, more than that and your a nut.

If a disaster happens you eat your perisables days one, two, and three then you have a week to find more food.

The only problem with MRE's is they are irradiated which destroys a large amount of the nutritional value. But they are relatively cheap and easy to use.

More importantly you also have to think about a water source.

If something that awful occurs to disrupt the food supply, why would you expect your stockpile to remain intact? Just what kind of disaster should we prepare for that is actually worth living through? Curious.

In the Pacific Northwest (BC included) we have an earthquake, sunami and volcanoe threat. If the roads, airports and train rails are screwed up then the stores would be empty within a day. If the power is out then even if the stores were full the perishable food would rot within a day.

Earthquakes don't kill too many in modern countries with strict building codes but they can sure screw up life as we know it.

    I start at Costco.

OK. I'm a nut. I live alone but shop at Costco (which means I buy in bulk). I share what is perishable and store up the non-perishables. I always keep a fresh case of water in my car.

The water thing started when the '94 earthquake caught me unprepared. I had some food in my cupboard but no water at all. Now I make sure I have water with me at all times.

I'm a nut - but always have food to share.
