I have worked on my cars for years. No, I don't like working on my own cars, which is why I bought a Toyota....

Just finished working on my wifes car. The battery terminal was fused to the battery. It was leaking fluid, (acid). The terminal actually broke away from the battery. Had to hack saw the sucker off. Then came the fun part of making a new connection work where the cable had to be cut and spliced to a new terminal. I love working on cars. So much that I'm taking lesser pay to do something I love, as oppsed to making more money because I can.

Any opinions: My check engine light went on. Took it to the dealer and they said it was related to torque converter. There are no smells or hesitations and they reset it. Had the transmission fluid changed a year ago. If it doesn't go back on can I just forget about it? Thanks.

Oh hell yes. I do everything I can possibly get away with. In fact, I just had to replace the alternator on my Accord last week. I completely do all the maintenance on my motorcycle as well. I'm down to about 20 minutes for taking out the carb, adjusting it, and putting it back in. I also do all of my own home repairs and whatever else needs to be done - plumbing, electrical, etc(Home Depot loves me). Back in late Spring, I even built a new deck on the back of our house in one weekend...whew, that was a back-breaker!

For years I had a '69 VW Bug that i made into quite the fast little car. There was a dragstrip nearby and I would spend a weekend a month racing the 1/4 mile for fun. There were a number of car buffs in the hall so I had plently of comapny back then. I sold the car off during my divorce.

I restored a '68 Firebird 400, did all the interior work myself, always maintained the mechanicals (from brakes to head gaskets) - my dad was always the "I'll fix this" sort. I've done a lot on my current car ('87 Fiero GT), from body panel upgrades to tune-ups, but as I get older I would rather have someone else do the labor in things like heater cores and clutch replacements...just takes so much time for some of these jobs...
