Okay, what's better than Progressive rock? Progressive METAL!!!
Forty-Six and Two it my friend!
I've Got Tool's first three albums, if you consider the LP "Opiate" an album.

Get up, walk out, and go get 10,000 days and Lateralus. Come back home, and sit there the rest of the day in awe. 10,000 days is light years ahead of Opiate.
Tool's albums are a journey through the process of abuse recovery and emergence into life afterwards. That's why Opiate is so raw, not just a coincidence there is a twisted version of a preacher on the cover. Anema is the one that depicts the purging of the hate and anger that comes from abuse, as well as the development of the inner person. The rest go beyond anger to healing.

I couldn't have said it better myself. A lot of people were hating the last album at first; it's one you have to really listen to over and over, all their albums are a journey through the pain into survival. Musical genius IMHO.
Re: Tool: Wow.
Well I have Opiate, Undertow, and Ænema.
I have most of the songs off of 10,000 days, but want to wait until I have the whole album. I have 4 songs from Lateralus, but I haven't listened to any of them either.
Now I have a "plan" for today...
(Hint: I downloaded the complete first three albums off the internet, and just haven't had the motivation to finish these other two...)
Edit: You are right, 10,000 days is amazing... much more progressive than the others.
I have close to 3,000 tracks in my Rhapsody library. These go through the 1960s up to the current music. Much is regular pop and R&B. The way it runs, I might find a gem from the mid 1960s that has disappeared from the radio, and have it followed by a rap song. There might even be a Christmas or patriotic song coming along!

Uranus, from Holst's The Planets. The instrumentation and orchestration of this work is euphoric.
