I don't remember parties ever being held for elders, but it would be no different than the annual pioneer dinner. Why honor them? It always frustrated the hell out of me when they expected handouts because they were a pioneer..if they choose that lifestyle they need to support themselves!

Makes you wonder how come the elders are allowed such a blatant display of "idolatry", while the rank and file can't even celebrate their own birthdays! -

OMG - that sounds so sychophantic and sick making. Really wrong IMO, they shouldnt be 'honoured' as if they were something special.
I bet they dont throw parties for the single mums, and the old ladies who have been faithful for years on end with no recognition.

Why not a party for the single people?
Why not a party for the older or infirm people?
Why not a party for the depressed and discouraged people?
It always irritated me that people would suck up to the elders and the pioneers (and the CO and wife). Even when I was an elder's wife, I would find a reason to miss such things and only went when my husband told me he was getting flak for it.
I remember one congregation entertained a GB member and his wife for their dedication but the BOE decided that the only deserving ones of their small dinner party were the BOE and their wives. NOthing like the people Jesus invited to his feast, those of the earth and worse.
