It's not even close...
Mario wins hands down. Seriously, I haven't played a Mario title since the Super mario 64 (which was a 3-D masterpiece and revolutionized the genre btw...), but they don't even compare. Lets take a look at the matchup shall we?
Mario is the flagship character of a console giant who is currently beating Sony and Microsoft in this generation of console wars both at the home console level and the handheld. Sonic is the flagship character of Sega who bowed out of the console wars years ago with the Dreamcast.
Mario is one of the most recognised character in the world along with Ronald McDonald and Santa Clause. Sonic was once one of the most recognised characters back in the 90's.
Super Mario brothers titles have outsold Sonic titles overall something like 20 to 1. Also there are way more Mario titles out there.
New Mario titles are worldwide gaming events looked forward to with great anticipation among the entire gaming community. Sonic is now released on Nintendo platforms (ouch...).
Mario has always been associated with revolutionary new gaming trends, Sonic lets you roll around in loops while collecting gold loops or some crap.
In summary folks, you may prefer one character over another, but which is the greater character? I'm sorry but it isn't close.
A bizzarre japanese interpretation of an Italian stereotype beats the Hedgehog with an "attitude" hands down.

Sonic all the way he such a bas ass they gave him his own comic book series. He is SEGA! As I said Sonic the Hedgehog is METAL. He makes the Roadrunner, Speedy Gonzales, and the Kiwi ( See Tasmania) like like slugs on a coffee break. Sonics side kicks all have character instead of just being characters. His enemies actualy have sinister goals beyond kidnapping someones b****. Dreamcast is a true hardcore gamers, and hackers console in fact it is back in production if I heard right from sources. Dreamcast was way ahead of it's time to boot also Gamecube and Wii owe some of there idea and desisgn to Dreamcast.
