More likely than not the "crime" was in patronizing resurrectionists.
It was not an uncommon pursuit of renaissance men like Franklin to study gross anatomy. How else would he have known that bifocals would work if he had not had the knowledge of the eye's construction from dissection? Since the sexes of the bodies were not mentioned, and they ranged from children to adults, I think dissection of dead bodies for the sake of knowledge to most likely scenario. Can you find an update?

Hey guys, it has been accepted for a while now that the bones were put there by William Hewson. He taught an anatomy school at the back of the house. He even lived there/roomed with Franklin for a few years.
