The Thanksgiving that never was

There were some postings in the JWD recent past that asked if while an active witling was Thanksgiving dinner served on or around the worldly holiday. I have been thinking about the subject off and on as the pavo day draws near, now I know why. My cell phone rang while I was doing laundry and checking for random kleenex in the pockets (thanks bem and misanthropic). I answer and it's my mom calling to let me know my older ms or elder brother (I really don't know which anymore. He was an elder then stepped down and maybe one again by now. We don't talk much. When I sent an e-mail out to the family that we were adopting it only took him six weeks to reply) and family are coming into town, wait for it...Thursday. Mom is cooking a turkey and invited us to dinner. My reply? "Uh, isn't that Thanksgiving?"

"Technically yes, but I got the turkey on sale. Besides, what else am I supposed to cook for that many people?"

Hamburgers on the grill?? What do you think your brother will say? How often has your mom ever cooked a turkey? Too funny!

Play that song - I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas-Gayle Peavey during the feast. Wonder if anyone will get the irony?

How funny, my family used to say "well everyone has that day off, and turkey is on sale"

That's the funny part. Every year as far back as I can remember my active jw family has gathered together (We ga-ther to-gether to ask the Lord's blessing...) in OKC or Tulsa (To Gramma's house we go, Heigh ho heigh ho heigh ho, What lovely things Thanksgiving brings, The nicest things we know!) and eaten Turkey and all the traditional side dishes either on or within 24 hours of Thanksgiving.

    But we never celebrated Thanksgiving.

    Ever.

And if you want proof, you can ask the 6 elders and 2 ms and who knows how many pioneer spouses, that we were with on November 25, 2004 when we moved back to Oklahoma. Witlings are known for being honest, after all.

What do you think your brother will say?

    The prayer before the feast.

    Then, "Pass the stuffing."

He will also be relieved to not find us within 200 miles of Okc because he won't have to investigate (at my mom's prompting) my apostate comments I've been speaking since I found this website or why I'm sending my kid to a Christian private school.

If it makes you feel any better -- We are celebrating Thanksgiving this year and having turkey and ham.

We always did that when I was a JW. The excuse was the same -- "everyone is off of work and turkey is on sale."

I remember a dub story on the boards- The adult was in the process of becoming a good dub and told the worldly family they could not come anymore for any holidays including of course Thanksgiving. The new dub feeling a bit down about spending the day alone was invited to an elders house for the day. The new dub gets there only to find and entire Thanksgiving meal on the table. The new dub was put out a bit that they gave up their time with family only to spend the day with a bunch of strangers doing exactly the same thing her/his worldly family was doing!
