I learned never to do business with relatives and jws. Life went much more smoothly after that.

We had the same thing happen down here in Pinellas county Florida, A brother, ministerial servant was taking other friends investment money and covering the bad investments with the new money and maintaining his lavish lifestyle. It caught up with him he did a couple of years in the big house. Now hes back in good standing. But those who lost their money are out of luck. This guy still maintains a lavish life style. It was covered in the St Pete Times. The brother maintained his innocence.

I have bought many homes in the last 30 years, got mortgages and refinanced many, many times, never had any problem with banks and mortgage company except the only time that i used my 'best friend' and elder for refinancing and it turned into hell as i caught him

overcharging and breaking the law. I put a stop to it and did not lose any money but five others in the congr. were taken for 1000's of dollars.

Money that they could not afford to lose.He was taken before the elders and CO but nothing eve happened.

He is still serving as an elder and giving talk at circuit assembly.

In the 1970s my mother was doing the books for an elder, that was doing the same thing, taking new investor money to pay earlier investors. She went to the elders and they wouldn't do anything. She stopped doing his books and never talked about it again, the elders must have put her in her place. The elder shortly there after moved to Washington state. I am sure the investors never saw their money again.

"It just proves that the DUBS are no different than any other religion"

NONONONO it does not - this is stupid. We have to make a distinction between acting as a representative of one's faith and also being an individual. Let's say this man happens to be a JW but one who also happens to like twinkies. It would be stupid to make the non-point that:

"It just proves that the twinkie eaters are no different than any other snack eater"

Its obvious in this context that this guy doesn't represent all twinkie eaters. Let's get some balance here and not fall into the sensationalist trap that the paper made - his religion is secondary to his crime. Can you imagine how stupid it would be to prefix every description in the news with a belief.

    "Atheist jailed for shooting"
    "Muslim steals handbag"
    "Republican has itchy arse"

    and so on..

Division and stereotyping starts by making normally unrelated links between the behaviour of a few and a larger group they happen to be within. You all now full well that most sincere JWs would not defraud despite you knowing some who did (you just know more JWs so you have more bad apples to choose from.)

Exit stage right leaving soapbox behind.

Drew Sagan - I know the brothers involved in the insurance scam you mentioned very well. We all grew up together.

Many of the Board of Directors and senior management were Elders, MS, pioneers...

They lived extremely lavish lifestyles with large homes, sevral late model cars, furs, jewelry etc...

The were indicted by the feds for stealing millions of dollars from unsuspecting client, over 90% were dubs.

Either pleaded guilty or were found guilty and were either ordered to pay restitution, or jail time and restitution.

Many have up to 50% of there wages garnished to pay the fines.

By the way, the President of the company was a subsutite CO in the New York area.

Some of you people make me laugh. The Witness organization is made up of imperfect human people, just like you and me. There will be those that seek to defraud others in the organization and unfortunately its not always easy to spot and expel these people. This is a sad event but some of you seem to think the Witnesses must be perfect in everything they do or that somehow proves they aren't legit. Personally, I have no idea if they are legit or not but I can tell you that this event in no way alters my opinion in favor or against. This same thing unfolds in churches across the nation on a daily basis. Stop being so consumed by hate that you cant see the forest through the trees.

The reason why we notice when JWs do this stuff is that their org. brags that they are ABOVE this sort of thing. After all, they belong to the one true religion...yeah, right...

That is the difference. And that's why we notice. The baptists, methodists, etc don't claim to be the only true religion and they don't forbid the rank and file going to court.

    There you have it...

Please tell me you are kidding. Otherwise show me specifically cited examples of where they "brag" about being above this? No, more likely they (and every single religion in the world) strives to be above this sort of thing and actively encourages their members to steer clear of these things.

look at it this way: the org. is a huge group of people who are taught to be obedient, not to ask questions and not to make waves. Also, they are taught that the ONLY people they can trust are other JWs. Just as JW rules create an ideal climate for pedophiles, they also create an ideal setting for con men (and women.) It's a huge pool of suckers who blindly trust their "brothers" and don't think for themselves or ask questions.
