Melaleuca, hah I had almost forgotten about that one! One of parents' close friends was heavily into that and trying to recruit us.

Sam and I were willingly recruited into Tahitian Noni by our best friends at the KH - the same one who later testified against me to my JC - the irony....we have since left the scheme but it didn't seem to create a problem for our sponsors to be shunning us on the street and collecting money from our efforts at the same time. Makes me laugh.

I agree with all comments so far and so would Steve Hassan - MLM is a commercial cult with all the same hallmarks of religious cults, so hardly surprising they attract similar people.

'Here is something that can change your life. Now go tell all your friends and family' - should ring some bells...

Incidentally the most successful distributor in Tahitian Noni is an unassuming JW from Oklahoma - Ken Roland - I would guess he is earning in the region of $3m per annum from the scheme. Most of his downline are JW's.

Many times I tried to warn friends in the cong not to get involved in these things, as I had been myself and gotten burned more than once. Some became quite upset with me because they were warned that others would speak negatively of their newfound opportunity. (Sound familiar?) I remember in one congregation, right after the Thursday meeting, car trunks would be popping open as brothers exchanged boxes of "Mix-I-Go", a gasoline additive MLM scheme. I'm sure there are more than a few who still have boxes of stuff like this in their attics or basements.

One elder, who had a book study in his home, was an Herbal-Life devotee. We all had to enter his home each week through the garage, which was a virtual Herbal-Life store, with shelves upon shelves of product lining the garage wall. Immediately after the prayer each week, he would have his order book out. I was so offended I spoke to the PO about it, but they were very close friends and both quite well-to-do. Hey, never, you know them, Lloyd and Jim.

Oh yeah, forgot to add homeopathic remedies. I know NUMEROUS of those sugar pill poppers in the JWs, my mom being one of them but she's not as bad as she used to be.

I got interested in Melaleuca by the environmental pitch, until I discovered I was allergic to it. Nothing takes the wind out of the sails of a MMM pusher than discovering people have strong allergic reactions to their product.

My JW mom and sister are into Melaleuca and Mary Kay. Back in my old hall it seemed everyone was into an MLM of some sort.

It's weird, I know alot of born-again Christians into this kind of stuff as well.

I wonder if there are any common personality traits involved?
