"How can you say you believe me when I say I love you
when you know I've been a liar all my life?" - Royal Wedding
Richard Pryor (after his girlfriend catches him in bed with another woman): "Who you gonna believe? Me or your lying eyes?"
BUT...what happened between 1933 and 2007 in order for the "truth" to become so distorted or altogether hidden at times?
Nothing. They behaved the same. Child abuse was covered up back in the 30's, except back then it was the vast majority of society also turned a blind eye.
I remember once reading that in the 19th century, there were no laws governing parental conduct toward their child. It was believed to be a private matter. So if a man wanted to have sex with his children that was his privilege. The little brain cells are growing old now, and I may get this wrong, but I believe it was the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who first brought about child abuse legal action. Their argument was that if it is cruel and illegal to mistreat an animal (and courts had upheld by then that it was), then it must logically follow that it is cruel and illegal to mistreat a child.
As society changed, especially towards child abuse in the 80's, the Witnesses remained stuck in the "don't ask don't tell" mode. I believe the mindset was/is that it interferes with selling their literature (and nothing is more important than selling books and magazines).
Jehovah's Witnesses, like most fundamentalist cults, offer simple solutions to complex problems. One simple solutions to child abuse is "It didn't happen". Case closed. See no evil; hear no evil; speak no evil.
Never mind the toll on human lives.
