Surprising that nobody listed this one. While teh song isn't really about leaving a religion -- it compares loss of love to a loss of faith -- it really meant a lot to me when I left dubdom. It's still one of my all time favorites. Brilliant lyrics.
ARTIST: REM
TITLE: Losing My Religion
Oh, life is bigger
It's bigger than you and you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh, no I said too much, I said enough
{The verse we repeat}
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep a view
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh, no I said too much, I haven't said enough
{Refrain}
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper, every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep my eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool, for
Oh, no I said too much, I said enough
Consider this, consider this
Hint of the Century
Consider this - slip
That brought me to my knees, pale
What if all these fantasies come flailing aground
And now I've said too much
{Refrain}
But that was just a dream, that was just a dream
{The verse we repeat}
{Refrain}
But that was just a dream
Try, cry, fly, try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream

your selection is, of course, one of the best anthems we could have - check my opening post.
Another is the following. Read the lyrics carefully.
Paul Weller was writing about the ability of ordinary men and women to change the socio/political structures around them.
Aren't we all trying to do something similar?
You don't have to take this crap
You don't have to sit back and relax
You can actually try changing it
I know we've always been taught to rely
Upon those in authority -
But you never know until you try
How things just might be -
If we came together so strongly
Are you gonna try to make this work
Or spend your days down in the dirt
You see things can change -
YES an' walls can come tumbling down!
Governments crack and systems fall
'cause Unity is powerful -
Lights go out - walls come tumbling down!
The competition is a colour TV
We're on still pause with the video machine
That keep you slave to the H.P.
Until the Unity is threatend by
Those who have and who have not -
Those who are with and those who are without
And dangle jobs like a donkey's carrot -
Until you don't know where you are
Are you gonna realize
The class war's real and not mythologized
And like Jericho - You see walls can come tumbling down!
Are you gonna be threatend by
The public enemies No. 10 -
Those who play the power game
They take the profits - you take the blame -
When they tell you there's no rise in pay
Are you gonna try an' make this work
Or spend your days down in the dirt -
You see things CAN change -
YES an' walls can come tumbling down!

Pope,
I loved the words to "Trust Yourself." Looked for the song with Bearshare, and found one that is it, but it's a poorly recorded live version and doesn't give the band's name. Also found one called "Trust Yourself" by Blue Rodeo that is not the same song. Please tell me who did it so I can find a studio version.
Anybody else who knows, jump on in here, in case Pope misses this post.
Thanks!
COMF
Hope this is what you're looking for COMF. Dylan was never a favourite of mine - too whiney! But I have to admit I quite like this one!!
TRUST YOURSELF
Bob Dylan
Album: Empire Burlesque, 1985
Trust yourself,
Trust yourself to do the things that only you know best.
Trust yourself,
Trust yourself to do what's right and not be second-guessed.
Don't trust me to show you beauty
When beauty may only turn to rust.
If you need somebody you can trust, trust yourself.
Trust yourself,
Trust yourself to know the way that will prove true in the end.
Trust yourself,
Trust yourself to find the path where there is no if and when.
Don't trust me to show you the truth
When the truth may only be ashes and dust.
If you want somebody you can trust, trust yourself.
Well, you're on your own, you always were,
In a land of wolves and thieves.
Don't put your hope in ungodly man
Or be a slave to what somebody else believes.
Trust yourself
And you won't be disappointed when vain people let you down.
Trust yourself
And look not for answers where no answers can be found.
Don't trust me to show you love
When my love may be only lust.
If you want somebody you can trust, trust yourself.

Sorry, I missed your post, COMF, but nicolaou was right on the button.
Its from Bob's 1985 Empire Burlesque album and one of the few songs he's ever
written with lyrics that are actually not too obscure! It must have been an effort for him to write!!
Here's another one that I quite like too, especially the line about 'don't look back'....
Pressing On
=========
Well I'm pressing on
Yes, I'm pressing on
Well I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.
Many try to stop me, shake me up in my mind,
Say, "Prove to me that He is Lord, show me a sign."
What kind of sign they need when it all come from within,
When what's lost has been found, what's to come has already been?
Well I'm pressing on
Yes, I'm pressing on
Well I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.
Shake the dust off of your feet, don't look back.
Nothing now can hold you down, nothing that you lack.
Temptation's not an easy thing, Adam given the devil reign
Because he sinned I got no choice, it run in my vein.
Well I'm pressing on
Yes, I'm pressing on
Well I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.

Here's one from us to the GB....(and the CO's and DO's)....
I love the "moneybags" line...
I'D HATE TO BE YOU ON THAT DREADFUL DAY
=====================================
Well, your clock is gonna stop
At Saint Peter's gate.
Ya gonna ask him what time it is,
He's gonna say, "It's too late."
Hey, hey!
I'd sure hate to be you
On that dreadful day.
You're gonna start to sweat
And you ain't gonna stop.
You're gonna have a nightmare
And never wake up.
Hey, hey, hey!
I'd sure hate to be you
On that dreadful day.
You're gonna cry for pills
And your head's gonna be in a knot,
But the pills are gonna cost more
Than what you've got.
Hey, hey!
I'd sure hate to be you
On that dreadful day.
You're gonna have to walk naked,
Can't ride in no car.
You're gonna let ev'rybody see
Just what you are.
Hey, hey!
I'd sure hate to be you
On that dreadful day.
Well, the good wine's a-flowin'
For five cents a quart.
You're gonna look in your moneybags
And find you're one cent short.
Hey, hey, hey!
I'd sure hate to be you
On that dreadful day.
You're gonna yell and scream,
"Don't anybody care?"
You're gonna hear out a voice say,
"Shoulda listened when you heard the word down there."
Hey, hey!
I'd sure hate to be you
On that dreadful day.

Heres my nomination-the chorus says it all
Artist:Bon Jovi
Album:Crush
Title:It's My Life
This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud
Chorus:
It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life
This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks
Chorus:
It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life
Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down
Chorus:
It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
Chorus:
It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life!
