FWIW, I had a conversation with my elder dad in Oct 07 about my joining the YMCA for the pool use and he said it wasn't a DFing offense, but indicated that the elders would be much happier if a member realizes that joining is viewed as a conflict of interest. It would probably limit any "promotions" within the org.
