I hear you Brent. We did oversized jumps when we were kids too. One day they moved the ramp back on me and I got a line drive to the nuts with my handlebars. That ended my youthful jumping sesions.

It funny but when evel was young his first stunt was to jump over a guy who was coming towards him on a motorcycle. He didn't make it and the guys head smacked him right in the balls. He did a flip in the air and landed flat on the pavement. He never stopped jumping after that. He had the cahonies of an elephant.

An eccentric motorcycle loving guy my dad's age who was influential in my life (he was a JW but later turned apostate) was at the Snake River jump in 74. He came home with a story of how he was able to get his hands on the drogue chute, but then he claimed he was chased by Hell's Angels with knives and he ended up with just a small piece. He kept it in a glass jar and charged people 25 cents to kiss it. He had a whole jar of quarters sitting next to it from all the Evil fans that visited him.. He probably made the whole story up but it was a good one nonetheless.

By today's standards of motorcycle jumping Evil's distances seem insignificant, But considering the bike he used it really was quite a feat. What a showman!

On April 1, 2007, Knievel announced to a worldwide audience that he "believed in Jesus Christ" for the first time.

Of all the days to profess faith in Jesus, I find it curious that he picked that one.

Good catch, now isn't that interesting.

Sad to see a relatively good man die such as Evil but why is anyone a real hero that puts his health and possible death just for a form of entertainment

sounds socially sick does it not.

You could ask that question about most sports. Statistcally fishing is the most dangerous sport.

How can fishing be the most dangerous sport? Are there really that many rednecks that drank too much beer out in boats and fall overboard?

Ever hear about the guys who came upon a canyon with a ramp built on the edge of it. As they got closer and looked over the edge, they noticed a burro laying down below.

They made their way down in the canyon, and as they got closer to the burro, he noticed a body under it. They struggled to move the burro, and when they finally managed to do it, they noticed the guy underneath had a helmet on. Then they noticed it had some lettering on it. It said: "Evil Gonzales"

Sorry, but I think of that everytime I hear mention of the great Evil Knievel.

Well that is sad news. I actually got to meet him and got his autograph when I lived in Laughlin NV and it was the "River Run" there. He was at a little local bar. He was very nice.
