There were some disturbing things in the book. That said, it was a story about the father's love for his son and trying to get him to a safe place.

I disagreed with some things the father did on their journey but I'm sure he felt the decisions necessary. The book was so good I gave my copy to my son for him to read.

I read this book recently also. It's an excellent book, one of the best I've read in a long time, and yes, it's very sad. Keep a dictionary handy if you decide to read it. Also, McCarthy has a very stylized way of writing that takes some getting used to.

jaguarbass: the earth was not destroyed. They are on earth. But whatever caused the catastrophe, caused ash to darken the sky (the stars are not visible) and the trees and other vegetation are dying off. Animals are becomeing extinct and very few people are left.

Water For Elephants is on my "must read" list.

I'm currently reading The Thirteenth Tale. I also recently read Almost Moon - loved that one.
