My last best Christmas.

The first year I did not celebrate Christmas.......mind you I had five kids, maybe four at that time........hell alot of kids!!! My ex-husband went nuts.

He kicked me out of the house. The elders from my congo went to him and patched things up good enough for me to go back home. I think I agreed to presents but no tree or decorations....honestly I do not remember.

What a nightmare that all must have been for my family, my parents and siblings and my ex-husbands family especially with all the kids I had and it was such a big time for us all.

    Man, I was a goofball.

Purps....I had five kids too when I stopped celebrating Christmas. My baby was just three years old....the oldest was 13. I threw out ALL the precious little handmade Christmas decorations and things they made in school, one was a huge painted Santa and reindeer that must have been eight feet long...done on that brown paper the kids used to do those big school drawings on.....it has broken my heart every year at this time when I think about it. The son that painted it is now 48 years old. It still tears me to bits.

The weird thing was....that I am the type that never throws ANYTHING out....I always saved things the kids made. It scares me at times, at just how "under the spell" I MUST have been to change my behavior that way. How MANY of us did things that we never thought we would do....and are extremely sorry for having been sucked into this cult? How many of us were tallked into doing things that were not "us", or reflected who WE truly were?

I got rid of everything Christmas too. I had some really nice things too as I thought when I was getting these things, this was going to be our family's forever keepsakes.

How hard a heart can get so quickly to throw out handmade things from kids......thats when I want to tell them up there in Brooklyn what dirty SOB's they are.

thanks Dinah, I will tell them you said that, they will get big heads!!! We were so much younger then....that was in the early nineties, I am going to have to get with them to find out what year it was.

It would be nice to see a picture from this year's Christmas. More memories.

Makes me think of the 14 year-old that refused a blood transfusion last week. Now he is dead, this is why so many fight and work to get the blood transfusion issue out there just from your statement above.

Just 10 minutes ago I was holding the Christmas card you sent this year, and thinking what a grand gift it was. I have never gotten a hand drawn piece of artwork in a card before. It is beautiful.

You only did what you thought was right. For the first 48 years of my life I did the same... dissing the family in favor of a cult. We can't make up for anything we did in life - we can only get on with new memories. I am sure sorry for the loss of your brother that way. I know the holidays intensify that sometimes too. But you are touching new people, building new relationships, renewing those you can. I feel privilaged to be a tiny part of that. You, Purps, are a gem.

I got rid of everything Christmas too.

You lost some photos, you got rid of some stuff.

Still, you have some great memories, and can get more photos, more stuff, more memories.

Thanks for sharing your holiday thoughts.
