by Sidney Poitier
I am reading this book, not because it is on Oprahs book Club list, or that I was particulary interested in Sidney Poitier and his spiritual Autobiography, but it was on the used bookshelf at the hospitol for 50 cents and I could not pass up a bargain.
I recommend it, Its very good and interesting. He grew up in the Bahama Islands, his parents were tomato farmers, his story is amazing and inspiring. The obstacles he hurdled, dirt poor and black in America. He was firmly rooted, raised with heaps of love.
I have loved his movies, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, In The Heat of the Night, Blackboard Jungle, The Defiant Ones. What is your Favorite Sidney Portier Movie?
from the book
"If I were asked for an evaluation of myself, I would readily admit to my sins, such as they are, to my weaknesses, my frailties, my shortcomings. I do that all the time, and the reason I can do that and not be ashamed is that I'm willing almost always to try my best. And when I fall short of my reach for something after having tried my best--even when I fall short that my attempt winds up in sinful behaviour--or when my weaknesses tug at my ankles, I accept that. I mean, I accept that failing, but I can't accept my sinfulness, my weaknesses, my frailties unless I've really tried to reach above them."
He is very mild and humble yet powerful.
I am halfway through the book, I think some here may find his book helpful on your spiritual path. Very down to earth, basic man.
