Perhaps...the last days of the Western World being the dominating force in world culture. I think the US will slip in power and some emerging country or region will take the lead in the next 100 years or so.

Great post nvrgnbk! It so echos the reality of our times rather than the doom-sayer JW type crap. The reality is that we are living in the best times ever. The easy access to news fools us into believing that the "world is going to Hell in a handbasket" but the truth is much more optimistic. People are living longer better lives on average. I have lived 46 years and have never personally come across someone who was starving to death. Not many 150 years ago could say the same.

I have been guilty of making these wrong assumptions as well especially in regards to the terrible state of our education system. I laugh at the bimbo who doesn't know France is a country on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader or along with Jay Leno when he askes people on the street the simple questions they can't answer. The reality is that just 150 years ago the vast majority of the population was illiterate and had never traveled from their homes beyond a five mile radius. Ignorance was the norm and not showcased for entertainment. The vast majority of people worked in back breaking subsistance agriculture from dawn til dusk and lived in filth and discomfort beyond our imaginations and lived very short unpleasant lives.

    Uh, Nvr?.....

I've got a little confession to make.

A lot of times when you cut and paste a big article I just glaze over and skip to the bottom.

But Liberty's praise of that article got me to go back up and slog through it.

Dang dude!! That article was well worth the read!

Hey everybody!! If your a "cut and paste" skipper, (like me) go back up and have a read.

    Thanks Nvr.

And, maybe, I'll read a little bit more in the future. Who knows maybe I'll even start liking.................... POLITICS! Ewwww.

Just realized I wasn't being a very good "Thread Sitter".

    OK, here goes:

    stilla:

mankind is at a crossroad without a doubt

Short. Sweet. Kept yourself to just $.01 worth. Thanks.

    Nathan Natas:

Enjoy the dance while you're at the party!

    Amen to that.

    CoCo:

    apoplectic apocalyptic

Hollywood is calling you man! Get down there!

    Nvr:

How come I always get so much homework from you?

Not complaining. Keep it coming. I just wish I had time to read a fraction of all the stuff you've recommended during your short career on JWD.

    Sweetstuff:

if we choose to stop expecting someone to save us from ourselves and realize we have the power to do it, all on our own. IMO

    Excellent!

I also thought the "IMO" was kinda funny after that rousing call to action.

BTW, you didn't really mean these guys did you?

    hillbilly:

I think the US will slip in power

Don't think you'll get too many arguments out of that statement.

    Liberty:

I like your outlook. Trying to adopt it myself. Thanks.

    bebu:

Smart a$$!! That sounded like something I would have posted. I guess karma is real after all.

    mentalclearness:

    Kali?

I live in Cali. Is that the same thing?

for the last 1000 years it has been Europe. Since 1945 it has been US/Western Europe. China and India will be the new foprces in 100 years or so - possibly less

I guess it's all in perception.

For some of us, the rights that women, colored- and gay people and probably other groups have earned only these last fifty years or so is a definite step in the right direction. For others it is a clear sign that the world is spiraling down into sinfulness and disorder.

I think population growth is the biggest reason for the perceived 'problems' (but as mentioned above also a positive sign of good survivability), in that everything that happens now will affect more people than before. A tsunami or earth quake or storm that before would only affect an uninhabited space now "suddenly" affects a greatly populated area and kills a lot of people, and this of course affects us in turn. Add to that all the types of media and communication technology we have today, where we get these catastrophes into our living rooms only hours after the fact, when before we might not even have heard about it (or only "rumors"). Remember that we were 'only' 2.5 billion people in 1950, and are now already 6.6 billion.

As I see it, the biggest potential problem when it comes to an "end of the world" scenario, is probably some wacko group (or state) who really really want the end of the world to happen, and when nothing happens, take matters into their own hands.

It depends how you look at it. I've noticed that when I was a witness, I was taught a very negative perception on life, so you could notice all the bad things that mean the world is "coming to an end", or you could look at the glass half full.
