A great read - The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses - just got it yesterday and I'm halfway through - hard to put down.
The following quote triggered the connection with the oral sex article. The authors are discussing the fact that the WTS avoided addressing the failed prophecy of 1975 (until 1980), and instead, from 1977-79, focused elsewhere:
"Concern began to focus more and more heavily upon theological interpretations of 'good behavior' - of what was demanded by God if Jehovah's Witnesses were to retain or regain Jehovah's approval. The Governing Body blamed the presumptuousness of the masses for the delay of Armageddon. Through what appeared to be an obsession with eroto-pathological behavior in the finest detail - including the sexual indulgences of married couples - the Governing Body deflected attention away from more fundamental theological and doctrinal problems. As early as 1974, the organization had redesignated what had been mere 'undesirable practices' such as smoking and oral sex as disfellowshippable offenses."
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS CURRENT FOCUS ON ORAL SEX IS AN ATTEMPT TO DEFLECT ATTENTION FROM THE CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL? IS THERE A PATTERN?
Interesting quote from Orwell's 1984: "Books....were...rewritten again and again, and were invariably reissued without any admission that any alteration had been made."
