What motivates a person to start a religion?

    It's not only deliberately negative reasons. Some people actually believe what they are saying (yes, mental illness) and/or actually want to help others. L.     In the case of charlie russel, i think that arrogance played a big part, a sort of finger at the religious establishment. Also, he probably felt the need of others around him who believed the same as he. Acolytes bouyed him up during the disconfirmations. As well, he handled his embrionic religion like a business, as business ran in his family.
