The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out and I watched her drive away
Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned in to rain...
Dan Fogelberg was an absolute favourite of mine. May he rest in peace.

This is very sad. His songwriting was impassioned, his melodies memorable.
I had heard a few years back he quit touring to deal with this. A couple years ago his website indicated he had made some sort of miraculous recovery from the cancer. Alas, it was not meant to be.
Dan, you left us too soon. I wish you could be like your song "Phoenix" and rise from the ashes.

AWAKE&WATCHING
So sad,
LEADER OF THE BAND
An only child
Alone and wild
A cabinet makers son
His hands were meant
For different work
And his heart was known
To none --
He left his home
And went his lone
And solitary way
And he gave to me
A gift I know I never
Can repay
A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldnt wait
He earned his love
Through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.
The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.
My brothers lives were
Different
For they heard another call
One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
And Im in colorado
When Im not in some hotel
Living out this life Ive chose
And come to know so well.
I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, I dont think i
Said i love you near enough --
The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band. -

I ran into him in the early 70's at a hotel in Pennsylvania. My uncle was getting married and Dan and the Band were staying at the same hotel.
One of my first star-struck moments. A snowy parking lot in western PA.
I liked his stuff and still have a couple of his LPs.
Really sorry to hear this news.

man.... the passionate fumblings of my adolescent awakenings were soundtracked with his music.......
Part of the Plan
I have these moments
All steady and strong
Im feeling so holy and humble
The next thing I know
Im all worried and weak
And I feel myself
Starting to crumble.
The meanings get lost
And the teachings get tossed
And you dont know what youre
Going to do next.
You wait for the sun
But it never quite comes
Some kind of message comes
Through to you.
Some kind of message comes through.
And it says to you...
Chorus
Love when you can
Cry when you have to...
Be who you must
Thats a part of the plan
Await your arrival
With simple survival
And one day well all understand...
I had a woman
Who gave me her soul
But I wasnt ready to
Take it.
Her heart was so fragile
And heavy to hold
And I was afraid I might
Break it.
Your conscience awakes
And you see your mistakes
And you wish someone
Would buy your confessions.
The days miss their mark
And the night gets so dark
And some kind of message
Comes through to you
Some kind of message
Shoots through --
Chorus
There is no eden or
Heavenly gates
That youre gonna make it to
One day
But all of the answers you seek
Can be found
In the dreams that you dream
On the way.amen, brother dan

Guest with Questions
So sorry to hear. I'd always liked his music, having two of his cd's. One favourite was leader of the band.

*summer*
Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you.
Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you.
I'll bring fires in the winters
You'll send showers in the springs
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings.
Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you.
Longer than thereve been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than thereve been stars up in the heavens
Ive been in love with you
I am in love with you.. -

I saw him in many venues in several states growing up and as an adult. He was about ten years older than I and his music always struck a chord - but it was my partner that had a true passion for him, and getting to know Dan's music was a way for me to get to know my partner. Tucson, Arizona from the Windows and Walls album (1984) was always a favorite, radio-unfriendly, of mine - and the Phoenix album (1979) is a standout of radio play from that time.
