December 25 th is the date of a Pagan Festival This may be true but Christians did not pick this date to coincide with the Festival of Saturnalia . They picked it because as Christians we base our beliefs upon Judaism and not pagans systems. And, the date of the Jewish Festival of dedication (lights) was December 25 th . Thus this day was picked to observe the birth of our Christ and remind us that HE is the true “Light of the World”. The lights on the modern day Christmas tree also remind us of this fact.

Good work lovelylik, but actually, December 25th was most likely chosen partly because it coincided with the pagan festivals celebrating Saturnalia and the winter solstice. The church thereby offered people a Christian 'alternative' to the pagan festivities and eventually reinterpreted many of their symbols and actions in ways acceptable to Christian faith and practice. Christianity was nowhere near as large as what it is today, and there was fear amongst the Christians that other pagan religions were gaining momentum and they didn't want to lose converts so they decided to celebrate the birth of the Son of God on the same day that the birth of the sun-god was being celebrated.

The Society tries making a huge deal out of this claiming how terrible it is to celebrate Christ's birthday on a the same day that a pagan event happened. Funny thing is, we took my Dub sister and brother in law out to celebrate their wedding anniversary on October 31st one year. There was no outcry for celebrating this event on the same day as the most 'pagan' holiday of the year. As per usual, they pick and chose what they want.

    Thanks Mary.

I wanted to show there is another way to look at the so called "evidence" about Christmas in the bible. I agree with you about why the date December 25th was probably picked.

I always felt it didn't matter what the day represented in ancient times, it matters how we view the date today. I think I remember reading in a WT that same thought one time. I don't have the quote since I got rid of my WT literature and CD. But I remember vividly reading it and thinking hmmm, if that is how the WT really feels, why don't they apply this view to xmas and birthday celebrations?
