One More Reason Not to Book Hotel on WT List

Although I don't know this as a fact, I suspect that the WTS is negotiating some pretty lucrative rebates from these hotels (which of course the rank and file JW pays) because they can guarantee a full house at $XXX per night.

This came from last year's thread about the rooming department KM insert, and will almost certainly apply this year. But, when the Watchtower Society negotiates with hotels, they are not having difficulties negotiating just for the price that you, the attendee, pay. They are negotiating free rooms for Beth Hellites and other high profile people at the a$$embly. Of course, they do not notify anyone about this fact.

More ominous is that they get a kickback for organizing these events. The snippet listed above came from www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/126208/2.ashx , and they are actually getting a rebate from each of the rooms that they book. The poster estimated about $3-5 per room-night. That means,if they have 200 rooms and each person stays two nights, the rebate can amount to $2,000 on that group. The Watchtower Society itself gets that money! Right into the Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund.

True, you are getting ripped off. Those kickbacks come from the rates that you are paying. If you are paying $60 for a room, $5 of that goes right back into the Watchtower Society's pockets. That means they could have made the same profit if you booked independently and paid $55 for the same room. Typically, very few people actually pay the full rack rate for a room anyway, as many have found out that booked a room on their own.

But, worse than getting ripped off and the dishonesty of the Watchtower Society for failure to disclose the kickbacks and free rooms (which would be fine, if they were honest about it), if you book a room through that number, you are helping support pedophilia. I wonder how many people would book a room through that arrangement if they knew that $4 or 5 of the price goes to defend pedophiles within the ranks and silence the victims. If you book through the Society's arrangement, you are effectively donating $5 or so per room per night to the Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund!

You (who are active witlesses still and still going to the Kingdumb Hell) are soon going to see the instruction again to book only within the "recommended lodging list". I urge everyone to NOT do that. If you can get out of going at all, don't. The whole synopsis will be on this forum, as there are always people that are forced to go and are willing to post the outline on here (often even before your turn). There is no charge for looking at such posts.

If you must go, and you are traveling where you need a motel, then I urge you please to find a motel room not on the list. Or, if you disobey and book before the event, without identifying yourself as a delegate, you are going to avoid donating to the Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund. You can also disobey and book online (but only if the instructions on the list do not explicitly allow doing so). You will save money on your phone bill as a bonus; you will also likely save yourself the aggravation of a busy signal (however, totally booked hotels could still be a factor).

Doing this could well yield some savings. Despite what the Tower wants you to believe, they are not getting the lowest price for you. You can do better by booking online. And there are likely lots of motels that are cheaper than what is advertised on that list. But, even if you do not save any money (and even if you actually pay more), you have the peace of mind that not one penny of that money is going to defend pedophiles. I would rather pay a few dollars more in profits for a motel operator or to help defray energy costs than pay indirectly to help the Watchtower Society defend its pedophiles. Obviously, the Tower is going to be pxxxed if everyone does this. But, if we are to cripple their operations, we must be astute to the hidden sources of revenue that they are generating and disobey them to avoid setting these off.

ok sure the wt gets rooms for free................ thats obvious......... dont know about any kickbacks and i would have to see proof of that before i would accept it.......... wouldnt surprise me but i like to KNOW they are doing it rather than being told.

i dont think it will matter if you book with them or not......... best course of action is to not go at all. you know that regardless if they get all their rooms for free............ they are still gonna add them to the expense of the convention and make you contribute towards that. brothers and sisters we are still short........... it cost us 17,000 to have this convention......... even tho we own the building outright........... and maintain it with volunteers.......... and bought it with your contributions............ and we have only received 11,000....... we know you will take care of this.

now a relative of mine has a thing where they joined some sort of a club and they can get rooms dirt cheap by being a member......... dont know the name of the club but rooms that cost 100 or better they can ususally get for 40 so that would be a viable solution. or do the whole priceline.com price ahead of time and dont identify yourself as a dub......... put in the price you expect them to give the jws........ or $5 less. if what your saying is true they would accept that. but then your still stuck with going to the damn convention....... and id have to be dead in my grave before id let myself be pulled into a place like that

I booked a room on the list last year in Evansville IN. It was the Best Western for $79. The room, service, breakfast, bed, pool were all horrible! After 2 nights my husband called the Marriott down the street, not on the list. We got a room for $89 and when we walked in I could swear I heard a heavenly chior sing! Down bedding, wonderful service, beautiful lobby and pool. We want to go back there just to stay there and go to Abuelo's. This isn't the first time we booked off the list and got MUCH better for little or nothing more.

It is very true that the best course is to not even go to the damn wastefest in the first place. That way, you save all the money and your time, plus you are not going to be programmed with gibberish. You might even save the aspirins for the headache you will get out of getting.

Priceline.com or other cheap ticket sites on the 'net are the best way to go for getting a good price and not obeying the orders of the WTS. Just disobeying feels good.

    WT Wizard:

Obviously, the Tower is going to be pxxxed if everyone does this.

    Nuff said.

My advice: If you stay at "approved lodging" let them know that you're a JW but that you're willing to accept a slightly higher price in order to get a room (or maybe a better room) and accept a price of oh, maybe $5-10 more than the WT price. This erodes the WT bargaining power next year.

If you stay at an "unapproved" lodging, MAKE SURE to ID yourself as a JW and that you're really happy with the "unapproved" accomodations. Same logic.

Could we get some verification about whether or not the WT actually gets MONEY from EACH ROOM booked? I've had brothers who work in Rooming verify the whole "Comped Room" thing for Bethel heavies, COs & DOs. In fact, if you contact rooming last minute, you can ask if there's any "comped rooms" left over. If you're a dub with a decent company reputation you'll get a room and will be told what the expected "donation" is. Now obviously, 100% of that goes straight to WT.

Here's a 3rd possible strategy. If the WT doesn't actually get money from each room, then how 'bout some JWDers (preferably smokers and heavy drinkers) actually planning a vacation and setting a "fine JW example" for the Hotel Operators? You know, leave a WT for a tip. Clean out the free breakfast bar and make sure to leave a tract behind where all the bagels were just moments before. Maybe do a little cooking in the room? Use a little "colorful language" pool side while loudly discussing the program you missed.

    Just a thought.

the instruction again to book only within the "recommended lodging list"

That's something I never quite understood. Why not just let people stay wherever they were most comfortable? The Society should just count their lucky stars that people are arranging to attend those time wasters Conventions in the first place!

I always believed there was something in it for them.

    Open Mind....I like your thinking.

The DCs were usually held in a city where I have family in, so we usually stayed with them. A few times though, my dad and I decided to share a hotel room just because. I remember wanting to be the good Dubbie and told him...."I don't know if that's on the recommended lodging list"

Does the WTS still find private homes for JW's to stay in the way they did in the '50's thru '70's? A sister from my old cong stayed in a luxury accommodation in a private home (much nicer than any hotel) in Asheville, NC, found by WTS canvassers.

I would open my home to a JW who came to town for an assembly.

Hmmm. Would you let them "witness" to you?

I'm 99.9% sure the whole "private home" thing has gone the way of the dinosaurs & Muffin Eggs.
