I've got a question. My brother and I recently sold some gift certificates on eBay. Some from walmart some from bass pro shops and some other stores. Does anyone know WHY someone would bid MORE than the face value of a gift card FOR the gift card?

For example he sold a $50 bass pro shop gift card (he won it at a Xmas party) for $53 plus $2 s/h. So someone paid $55 for a 50 gift card? I'm serious about this go into eBay and look at gift cards and what they are selling for. I'm selling a walmart gift card for $149 it has two days to go it's at $134 already! So your "savings" if you bought it right how would be less than 20%. I fully expect this card to get up into the 140's. WHY is the question! I mean what is the POINT?

    Am I missing something?

The same reason people would pay $100+ for an ordinary tootsie roll...Or ANY money for a piece of burnt toast..

Perhaps "Bass Pro Shop" and "Wallmart" customers arent not very smert at math.

I've bid on items that I know the regular price of, so am always surprised when the price goes far over. I've concluded that they must live in the Yukon Territority, or Antartica where there are few stores, so this is their only source of shopping.

Or sometimes in a country that does not have said item.

Though that is rarer than it should be.

I wondered if perhaps they knew some way of increasing the value like "double coupon day" at some of the stores? I know that some of the resturant cards it's possible to do that with but walmart cards? I've never hard of any such thing!

Are the buyers strictly in the USA? Could it have something to do with exchange rates and foreigners buying them with Euros via Paypal or something?

    Otherwise, they're idiots.

I sell a lot of things on ebay for more than their worth. For many buyers it's the convenience, perhaps they wouldn't know how to get such thing elsewhere on their own.
