Why does there have to be "a" meaning? It's your life, make it meaningful on your terms.
For me, it's to learn all I can, to be kind, to preserve the earth, and enjoy my loved ones.

My very passionate agonizing over this very question -- and my inability to find an answer for it -- caused such deep mental anguish in me as a young man that I came to desperately need something, anything, to give me an answer. I guess you could say I was ripe for the picking, and it probably surprised nobody who knew me at the time that I enthusiastically joined the Watchtower movement.
In a way, my joining JW's, and my eventual disillusionment with and withdrawal from them, has become a big part my "meaning". I guess that meaning taken in this sense, means self-discovery - finding out what your strengths are, what your weaknesses are, where you made your big mistakes in life, why you made those mistakes, what you've learned from those mistakes, how you're a more mature, wise, humble, whatever person for having made them. So I guess it's ironic that it took a religion as patently goofy as JWism to give me (now an atheist) a big chunk of my meaning and identity, for better or worse.
For me a look at the news is all it takes to see how completely ridiculous talking about a "God" having a "plan" for us is. The lady and her four kids (one of them 8 wks old) that were killed by a drunk driver up in Toledo Ohio a couple of nights ago, this was the "plan" for them? Ugh.

Since I don't believe in an afterlife, I have come to grips with my own mortality. Even if I'm not remembered a hundred years from now, if some friends and family were glad that I was alive and mourn my passing, then I've lived a pretty good life.
