Unexplained Mormon "miracles"...Unexplained JW "miracles"

  OK... lets get the ribbing aside. Our Mormon "miracles" are more unexplainable than yours...

  One of the many tools used by the Morg to keep it's members active is the use of faith promoting stories involving apparent miracles... or the unexplainable. There are unexplainable stories even in my own family. My mother tells of a time when she was doing baptisms for the dead. She stepped out of the room and came back as things were being concluded. She said she saw the spirit of a man who was supposed to be baptized that day, and was told he had been missed. A look through the paperwork showed that one was missing. The lost paper was found on the floor. She had been out of the room when that particular baptism was supposed to have been done. Freaky. I have never had an experience this unexplainable. There are other stories of healings, warnings etc.

  I consider myself a deist now. Like the forefathers (Washington, Jefferson etc..) I HOPE there is a god and that He/She is a benevolent interventionist. I want more "reasonable"support for this thesis.

  Along those lines, I would like to know if there is evidence in YOUR lives as EX JW's of the unexplainable. I would hate to think my cult has a monopoly on unexplainable stories. Are there JW, baptist, catholic, hindu, muslim, etc stories involving the unexplainable? If not, I may have to go back to my cult... Please save me and share YOUR stories.

  When Jehovah`s Witness`s go to an assembly....A loaf of bread always falls off the truck..........Thats how God feeds poor,hungry Jehovah`s Witness`s on the way to assemblys!.. .......................OUTLAW

  Our God was alot more subtle than yours.
  
  Part of the belief is that miracles died with the first congregation so anyone claiming to see something spiritual would be counseled and thought to be possessed by demons.
  
  Our miracles were very vanilla like a loaf of bread falling off a truck. Smuggling literature into a banned country or a tree falling on a neighbours house rather than the kingdom hall.
  
  Very bland, I wish I my mom became a mormon instead of a witness. :(

  Well, we had a medical 'miracle' in my family, and my parents firmly believe that their prayers to Jehovah was what made someone in our family well again. It was supposedly something the doctors couldn't explain, but lately I've found that what happened is not that unlikely.

  There was the one about the Witness woman at a door by herself. A man came to the door, but sent her away saying he wasn't interested. Later, it was found that this man was a murderer. When asked why he didn't try to kill this woman, he said that it was because of the two big men she had with her, one on each side.

  Of course, it was explained that these "men" were angels that lead the preaching work. Of course, they protected her.

  Later, I heard a slightly different version of the same story told by a woman who belongs to a local Congregational Church. I just sat and rolled my eyeballs, realizing now what drivel these stories were.

  Also, I believe, brother, that it was a poor pioneer (full-time preacher) man walking out in service, behind a CABBAGE truck, and someone threw cabbages at the witness, so he had something to eat for several days. Let's get the story straight.

  It's great to have a former Mormon on this forum to provide a broader perspective. Can you suggest a good Ex Mormon forum?

  Well, I was in a small congregation with one old "anointed" brother. Someone was about to take legal action against him and that day a tornado hit and sucked him out of the house. He was the only one who died. I know this happened because it was reported in the news, but I can't vouch for all the details. It really gave me faith that coincidences really happen. Or maybe the lesson should be don't get in God's way if he is trying to kill someone. He had to destroy a lot of homes to get at that one troublemaker.

  Grab a copy of the Christian Scientist's extra-Bible-book... what's it called? Ummm... "Science and Health With Key To The Scriptures"!

  The last chapter or two of that book details the wonderful things that have happened because of members' adherence to their faith.

  And of course you can find accounts of every other type of miracle in every faith. Just look around. Neither Mormons nor Christians in general have a monopoly on "miracles".

  In the Jehovah's Witness community, many such stories take on the form of urban legends. Just as the story you related dealt with a miraculous event during a LDS sponsored activity, so also do JWs tell stories of such things during WTS sponsored activities (such as their door to door work).

  One major differance though would be the way they describe their interaction with the divine. JWs will typcially never say they "saw" something. Demons and devils are usually either heard, or sometimes felt. Objects moving around on there own sometimes is claimed. If they believe miracles happen on their behalf, it is more likely a story where coincidence is king (e.g. recieving money right by chance just when they needed it, meeting people door to door when the other person is praying to God for help).

  Since JWs have a strict theology that teaches them the dead are unconscious they usually see such things as talking with the dead "foolish".
