Are Witnesses really all that different today, from other religions?

I know that in the early days of the Witnesses, they really stood out from other religions and shocked people with their thoughts. This was a different time, a more conservative time, in which new ideas were often seen as trouble in a world that seemed to be doing just fine the way it was. Today though, despite their desire to seem different. The Witnesses are really just teaching ideas that are not all that unacceptable. More then one religion, organization or even social group, often share there ideas and make them seem less outstanding among others in their stand.

For example ...

Not taking blood - I have a friend who is an RN here locally, and she has mentioned several times that Witnesses do not take blood and yet they are not the only ones. They have had many people say they choose to not have blood, for reasons that vary from; personal believes to simple product safety concerns.

Military Service - I know several people not willing to die for their country, and would not join the army or accept the draft. Personally, I think that group of people is why our country will not do a draft again, as I do not think the young men and woman would be so willing to accept it.

Not saluting the flag - Several people choose not to do this, in fact in a town near me that is very liberal, it is normal to go to a sporting event and have people boo at the flag salute and in some cases the events just skip the event.

Not associating with anyone other then their members - This has become real common in other religions, and even with some social groups. People associate with people they have something in common with.

Basically, I just do not see ANY Witness belief standing out that much anymore. Nothing that makes people think, wow they are weird. Even skipping Holidays is happening more and more as people from other countries or religions move in to the great melting pot and see little value in these dates. In all, I just think if this religion started today, and came out with all their past statements, people would have just thought, "What ever works for you" and not even cared a bit.

Yes i agree. Back when they first started they were most likely viewed as extremists and attracted alot of attention

Now in the 21st Century, i see a tiring and struggling organization that is desperately trying to keep people in the religion by fear and family emotional blackmail. Logic says something is going to give......BIG TIME !

The people, for the most part, are not as hardcore, but the religion is vastly
different from others.

You can walk into a Catholic church if you are a Lutheran, you can even go to
a Jewish wedding or funeral and tell your friends about it. You can tell them you
went to an R-rated movie. You can give gifts on birthdays and Christmas even
if you are Jewish. No organization asks you to shun your grandchild and
certainly to never eat with him. NOW, IF YOU ARE A JW, you may not
follow all the rules, but they are there. You don't tell them about eating with
the grandchild, exchanging gifts, or going to that movie. It's a secret.

As long as the shunning is in effect, the JW's are a vastly different religion.

In the ways I was mentioning is just an example. They are not just as "Different" as they used to be in the early days. Today, they blend in a lot. Most people I have spoken too in post Witness life, are pretty much used to them or do not see their thinking as all that odd.

Are Witnesses really all that different today, from other religions?
