When you went door to door and you stood outside of an old, delapitated home and the stench stale of cigarette smoke that had saturared the home for years eeked out of the still closed door.

Cucumbers and dead flesh. Once, as a surgucal orderly, I had to assist with the preparation of a rather large ladies foot that was going to be amputated. The skin of the lower leg and foot was stretched taught and black as midnight. That smell was the worst I beleive I have ever experienced.

When I lived in the Vancouver area, every day I walked my daughter to and from school, past a crematorium. THAT, has got to be the most vile smell I've ever smelled.
That, and bloated road kill on a hot summer day!
