well, i live pretty far from the big cities (closest big city one I dig is the Dee Young in SF) But i also dig the buddhist temple in Oroville, CA, from mining/railroad workers in the late 1800's

Carmel
We have three greart museums in our small town of 10,000. The largest is the Maritime Museum which has so many artifacts it takes all day to go through it. Being at the mouth of the Columbia River it is the site of thousands of ship wrecks where early seafarers tried to cross the bar and lost their lives. All kinds of great stuff! Another is the Flavel House, the early mansion built by Captain Flavel who owned practically everything in town, a dairy, a saw mill, several salmon canneries, dry goods stores and houses of lesser repute. He made is millions though as a government contractor providing pilotage for ships to cross the bar and sail up the river to Portland, Or. He parlayed that into a bevy of trained pilots that had a monoply on the service and forced the big shipping companies to pay an exhorbant fee for pilotage. Kinda like our vp and his sole service contracts in Iraq. Oh, sorry Haliburton and Dick are divorced.....or not! carmel

The Royal Ontario Museum (or ROM to those in the know) in downtown Toronto. Nice place, they just added a wing to it. Unfortunately after I've been there a few times in a few years I'm good for the forseeable future.

My favorite, which is about a two hour drive from here, is the Huntington in Pasadena. it has several large gardens, an art collection, a library with books like a Gutenberg bible and an original Audubon. It also has a tea house, you can have afternoon tea with sandwiches and dessert. Lovely huge gift shop. The gift shop at the San Diego Museum of Art is really good too, and the Museum of Man there in Balboa Park is a great place too.

I agree Hortensia, I've been to the Huntington and it's quite classy. I really felt underdressed when I went there many years ago. The one thing I remember was their Blue Boy exhibition. And yes, I would also add the SD Museum of Art and the Museum of Man to my list. Hell, I can add just about every stinkin' thing in Balboa Park to the list. You really can't go wrong in the Park.

Hi Liquidsky,
The museum of glass sounds great! I work for a window company....might be a good place for me to see...
My company began its' life as Rollscreen, (a screen that rolls up, out of the way when not in use) and there's a museum, housed in a former Railroad Depot...only takes a few minutes to tour it... Occasionally I have to go to our headquarters, and each time we visit the tiny museum. It's in Pella, Iowa, and you guessed it... I work for Pella Windows & Doors....
Here's the website to the museum http://www.pella.org/asp/news/news.asp?t=1&m=39&i=4
Pella is a really quaint town... It has an amazing Tulip festival every year....
