OPINION POLL: Dressing Up. Yay? Neutral? Yuck?

I don't even have anything nice enough to wear next to the suit my husband put on for his first "meeting" this past Sunday. Plus, I don't feel like I have to dress for other people. I'm a good looking woman, and jeans are my choice of dress. I was incredibly surprised to see him all duded up, because in the past that is one of the things he used to say about why he didn't like going to church. This is my first post in the forum...here to try to get knowledge to pull my hubby out before he gets sucked in any further. Any suggestions???

Four years ago I walked away from the KH. I have not put on a suit since then.

I have attended a few churches since, in blue jeans and white tennies.

I give the whole 'dress to impress thing' a big YUCK!!!!

Oh, like some other things in life - if I *have* to, it's a pain, but if I *get* to, it's fun. It's more fun to dress up now without meetings.

There was a time (in my "pretty youth") when I dressed trendy - pastel suits, Alexander Julian shirts, and then on weekends leather. Now that I'm older distinguished, I'll dig out a decent suit on the odd weekend. My favorite Bill Blass suit stopped fitting long ago, sadly, but I still have an Armani that was big at one time and now fits decently. I guess I had money for clothes back then!

If I have to do it for a special work meeting, I'm stuck with "ceremonial robes" and a choking tie; if I get to go to an event, it's fun (let's see...the dalek tie or the cows with funny hats?).

I have a few suits now for business or a night out. Other than that, I dress for whatever the occasion calls for

anybody want to buy two nice suits?

Maybe JWD should get a virtual "hopper" like they have at the Big House.

    Hermano:

I intentionally dress down, just to let them know I'm not open to any of their BS.

I'm looking forward to the day I can do the same. For now I just push the edge a little bit. I make it a point to wear a sport jacket & slacks on Sundays. Everybody around here knows Sunday = Suitday. Not too long ago the speaker left right after giving his talk and the chairman was looking for someone give the closing prayer. He comes up to me to see if I want to do it. (I think he was feeling sorry for me since I don't grace the platform with my presence nearly as much as I used to.) Mid-way through asking me to give the prayer, he gives my "Non-Suit" uniform the once-over and decides to find another stooge for the job. I was relieved.

Also, my jacket comes off right after the song.

That's the extent of my pathetic dress & grooming "rebellion" so far.

Leave it to you to come up with yet another great name for dub paraphenalia:

    "Embarrassment Badge"

LOL! I love it. And so true.

If you buy that I've got some Brooklyn real estate I'd like to sell you as well.

    RD:

Looking forward to fitting into dress clothes again,

You'll get there Dave. I know you can do it.

    Homerovah:

    A big YUK

C'mon now. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

There always seems to be an ever present phoniness about men with suits on

Men with brief-cases have always stolen more than men with guns.

    wifekeepsmeinit:

There is absolutely no excuse for getting into a suit to sit on a plastic chair at a brothers apartment for the Book Study.

I couldn't agree more! Especially if it's summer time, sweltering with no AC. Bring on the surf trunks & flip-flops I say.

WHOA NELLIE! Stop the presses! Welcome to forum.

    I'll be right back.

    AK-Jeff:

Duly noted. Can we still share some vino together even if I'm wearing a suit?

I always loved dressing up. I don't go to meetings anymore and I threw out all those clothes, but I do dress up for work ... hose and all.

    Again, welcome to the forum.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your situation without revealing personally identifying information?

Actually, it would probably be best if you started a "Help! I'm New Here." type thread.

    Are you comfortable doing that?

I like dressing up if the occasion calls for it. I rarely wear a dress or skirt these days though.

Totally opposed to it because of the bad taste in my mouth left by the dictates of the authoritarian society I was raised in. When I was in "that place" they told us what to wear: how long it could be, how short it could be, what color, what jewelry, etc. To me the word "modest" just makes me want to cringe. It's not that I wanted to wear clothes that showed my fanny, or my cleavage, hanging out, but even to be a little bit "smart" in one's dressing style was considered "haughty" or "worldly." It was also abundantly clear that if I wore something even vaguely what they considered to be "immodest" I was inciting brothers to commit gross sins, which they normally wouldn't have done if I, as the evil temptress, wasn't parading around in front of them. This whole "code of dress" bothered me because it put the blame squarely on the shoulders of the women if a man should lose his standing with Jehovah, instead of holding HIM accountable.

Now, it's very rarely that I wear a dress or makeup because of this upbringing. I will wear nice clothing, but prefer to wear pantsuits, and very little makeup. I prefer to be comfortable and to dress in what makes *me* feel most comfortable, whether it be pleasing to someone else's eye or not. I'm not here to impress anybody, just to live my life how I want.
