Cardinals manage territory pretty well. He sees his own reflection on the glass and motors over in an effort to repel the intruder. Whack! bluejays will run into a window doing the same thing.

I had one that took on his "rival" .... every day all spring. About 8 am the light was just right on that particular window to reflect his image ...he'd crash into the glass 10 times or more in an hour.

I'd put something on the glass pane to break up the reflection. See if that helps.

I know in one case from years ago a business had this problem. It was suggested that they use cutouts (silhouettes) of birds that are natural predatory rivals of the birds hitting the window. Apparently it works or great reduces window strikes

The site that Finally Free posted looks good. The decals are hard to see by humans but really stand out to the birds.

I know how you feel. I get the same way about suicidal rabbits running across the road. I need a bumper stickers that reads " I brake for bunnies"

Yep, the silhouettes work really well, especially ones of Owls. That predators shape is indelibly imprinted in a bird's brain to say DANGER!

You can also get a 18'' plastic Great Horned Owl at garden centers, even at Wal-Mart, that you put in your garden to scare the birds away. We have a couple and they work great...even stray dogs and cats won't come on our porch when they see it. (<--a bat owl?)

One time when I was little we had come home from the Sunday meeting and my sister and I were changing in our room. Being 2 years apart and sharing a room, we fought, oh about 90% of the time. I don't remember the exact moment that this happened, I just remember the aftermath. Apparently, my sister and I were fighting, again, and all the sudden my dad hears a scream like none he ever heard before coming from our room. He charged in the room and my sister and I were scared and crying because a grouse had flown into our bedroom window, broke through it, and was flopping around on our bedroom floor.

What makes this story even more bizarre? Guess what we had for dinner that night.

I saw a bird hit a large picture window, broke its neck and died. Looking at the window you could see a reflection of the sky.

My first introduction to the Magpie was in Florida. I thought it was funny watching them on the door of a car looking at themselves in the sideview mirror.

This little Cardinal finally shook it off and flew away, took him a long time.

All the time. Last spring I was pulling weeds under one of the large front windows of the house, and I found a big pile of dead birdies. =(. Poor things.
