Do you know how fast the world is changing?

While you were sleeping the world is changing in very unusual ways.

Do you think that you have been doing a good job keeping up with new discoveries that may change your life?

Here are just three things I pulled out of the news just on the topic of food and gardening that happened in the last month that might surprise you.

    1. Scientists have discovered how to make delicious steaks without killing any animals. This will soon be going into commercial use and may radically affect the worldwide meat industry. The inventor says pork, beef and chicken meat could all be produced artificially as well as kangaroo, whale and shellfish.
    2. Scientists have also discovered a new nontoxic way of eliminating dead bodies. Instead of burying someone or cremating them, they will freeze-dry them and then use a vacuum and ultrasonic waves to leave only a small bit of powder left that makes good fertilizer.
    3. Research shows sun worshippers can protect their skin by eating pizza. German scientists say the unique mix of ingredients in pizza is the perfect combination to keep out harmful UV rays. The protective effects of one pizza only last for about two weeks though.

Once again, I say you should be the professor :-)

BTW: I think you should tell your JW friends about the freeze-drying.. Just think,

    You can detoxify your body.

First, determine your "personal cleansing deadline".

Then, consume detoxifying products which have the power to bring you into the "Detoxify Zone". After a one-hour period, you then have a five-hour window in which toxin levels are "reduced" to a desireable level.

Your toxin level will unfortunately resume its prior levels of unpreferred status after the five hours, however.

For those pesky "external" toxins, you can shave your head.

I'm disappointed, Skipper, by the title! Being the boffin you are, I expected you to have calculated EXACTLY how fast the world is changing!

A lot of the Governing Body member are 'full of crap' so they might make good fertilizer without going through that process. Just 'bury' them.

Now, that wasn't nice, I apologize!

Funny you should mention that Stephanus, as I have a fairly strong interest in futurism I try to keep a mental model of the rate of change. Many futurists are now saying that the rate of change is changing. So, not only is there a constant steam of new innovations and discoveries that match the growing population of scientists and innovators, all the synergy that happens between one idea and another accelerates things even more dynamically.

What this means in plain speak is that the things most people think might happen say 20 or 30 years from now are more likely to happen in 10 years, and what actually happens in say 30 years might be what we expect in 100 years.

Let's just hope this applies to rotten and harmful ideologies dissappearing as well:)

I take it you've read Virginia Postrel, pin-up girl for the Dynamist movement? (And one of my favourite journalists, I might add!)

I like her style Stephanus. She reminds me some of Faith Popcorn. I haven't read her new book yet though, got a big backlog of stuff to read. I'm guessing you enjoy reading "Reason" as well:-)

Reason is one of my regular reads, yes! I don't get off on the US politics so much (not being too relevant to home, you understand! Especially all the local council BS which gets a lot of coverage in Reason), but some of the stuff is brilliant. On a slight tangent, have you got Bjorn Lomborg's book yet? Both his and Postrel's are on my "must obtain" list.

Stephanus, you must be talking about the book, The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World. I haven't read this book yet either but have read a few reviews on it and people either seem to love it or hate it. Pretty typical when you are stepping on sacred toes in the scientific world. Lomborg is optimistic about the possibilities of technology. Basically I am optimistic too but I have this damned dark side of my personality that makes me Dr. Jekel and Mr. Hyde and I jump back and forth over the fence between my views of the future.

I got into an interesting discussion with another futurist recently about the Tragedy of the Commons and I think I recall him mentioning this book.

My own favorite authors for futurism are Hans Moravec, Alvin Toffler, Jonathan Margolis, Ray Kurzweil, and William Strauss (The Fourth Turning) just to name a few.

So many books, so little time.
