Vinny,
I ain't about to throw stones, there is some great guitar on Valley Girl!
If there was one song of Zappa's I didn't like, it was Coneheads (He must have owed someone a favor for that soundtrack gem).

Zappa is good. I loved Over Night Sensation best of all. Here's a treat for you: Frank Zappa on the Monkees with Mike Nesmith. Nesmith is playing Zappa who is playing Mike Nesmith:
Rising Eagle,
I posted that, it was a duet with FZ and Steve Vai. The song is called Stevie's Spanking (Steve Vai was in Frank's Band for a while).

FHN,
I've seen that before, it is hilarious.

Thank you JK that was the one I was thinking about. I managed to forget Steve Vai's outfit too, thank Dog.
well his SNL appearaces were funny. I like baby snakes and Bobby Brown from Sheik Yerbooty Joe's Garage had some classics. His live shows had a great collection of musicians.
Zappa is a bastard.
He blew not one, but three feckin fuses in my new (second hand) amp.... and I don't have any spares.
Bastard.
It is very quiet around here tonight.
Cheers
Chris
KENSEI- I've heard Peaches en Regalia , good song ! I'll have to hear the other ones you mentioned !
JK- Thanks for the u-tubes , bud !
VINNY- Valley Girl was a really funny song ! Liked it a lot.
RISING EAGLE - Frank Zappa was a really great guitar player - in fact from what I can see he was very underrated in the major public eye as a musician. He should have received more acclaim than he did !
FHN- Thanks for the u-tube . Very funny stuff !
WHA HAPPENED- I'll have to see if I can locate Zappa's appearances on SNL on DVD somewhere . I bet that was funny !
BLACK SHEEP- Sorry he blew your fuses out ! Well, I bet you enjoyed the music though ! LOL! Peace out, Mr. Flipper
Zappa was a unique musician, both composer and guitarist, no doubt as a result of the fact that he never had a teacher, but taught himself to compose and play with the use of an ear and library books. I spent a weekend at his home many years ago and was struck by the lack of the usual banks of LP's one sees in a musical home.
I have noticed that most of the recommendations made on this thread are for his more accessible pieces, Hot Rats, The Grand Wazoo, Apostrophe, Weasels etc.. but some of his 'freer' work, like Jazz From Hell is worth perservering with.
Zappa was often described as on the Right Wing politically, but it seems to me that his philosophy was a mix of thinking which defied political 'clubs' and his ability to see the insanity in certain sectors of US Society was clear and uncompromising. He was virulently anti-censorship, being like myself of the 'If you do not like it, switch it off' mentality, though I do not endorse all his views on the subject. One thing is certain, the man did not play his music, he WAS his music and many would be musicians would do well to learn how to be this way. You cannot divorce the man from the music.
I have all of Hot Rats 'tabbed' if anyone wants to follow the stunning solos on the album. I can scan them and send them via email if you let me know what section you need.

HILLARY STEP- Thanks for that contribution
