that's interesting. What do you do to make your surroundings comfortable and pleasant? Books? Windows? Or maybe you're not really a visual sort of person? Music? I'm interested...

I collect early oil portraits from the 1800's, as well as folk art paintings, and oil paintings of dogs and horses.

Not much really. I keep it clean, and that's about it. I have windows behind me, but I normally have them shut because I get a bad glare on my monitor when I leave them open.

I do listen to music almost constantly. Instrumental music because I can't concentrate with vocal music in the background. At this very moment I'm listening to the Gerudo Valley Soundscape. I seem to prefer classical music.

But I always keep my computers desktop nice and pretty. My wallpaper changes a lot, and I have several beautiful movies for a screensaver. Including some animusic songs, and a couple FMVs from Kingdom hearts.

Here's a picture of my current desktop image. It changes every hour:

alt <- That's probably the prettiest thing I have.

I actually didn't notice how strange it is not to have pictures until I read this thread. Then I realized that everytime I go to a hotel, they have those abstract pictures of blocks on the wall, or a bowl of fruit. My friends all have paintings of cottages or crochet work on the wall, pictures of clowns... ? Or great big pictures windows.

For the record, I'm perfectly happy living in a room with no paintings and the windows shut.

My walls showcase paintings done by my husband's mother. She died of breast cancer before I met her. They are scenes of plantations, birds & gardens and Louisiana swamps. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet her.

I have a thing for John Waterhouse - he paints beautiful nymphs and women in really dramatic scenes. Totally romantic. I love this one because of the tempestuous sea

Hmm Hortensia - you've made me want to go to an art gallery now. I think I might treat myself to a day at one of the London galleries next week once I've completed my next essay.

    Thank you minu.

My absolute favourite of Waterhouse is The Lady of Shallot.

It reminds me of the bit in Anne of Green Gables where she is playing out the scene from the poem and reading it with her bosom buddy Diana. I can totally lose myself in that picture.

Oh my god I just found out that painting the actual original is on display at Tate Britain. I think I am going to take my journal and go sit before the Lady of Shallot and dream for a bit. I might have to do it tomorrow.

    (I love this thread!)

I remember Anne of Green Gables! Wow, I haven't seen that in such a long time. ***off to see if I can find it to watch on the next rainy day***
