Ever hear of this?
Dan
pre watchtower org name ?
nelly
Yes!
People's Pulpit tracts (later titled EVERYBODY'S PAPER, and then THE BIBLE STUDENTS MONTHLY) 1909
There may be a site for them on the net.
You're on the right track. Here's a hint:
God's Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached published by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society in 1973 had this to say concerning the issue of idolizing C.T. Russell:
"This view was prominently featured in the book published in July of 1917 by the People's Pulpit Association of Brooklyn, New York. This book was called "The Finished Mystery" and furnished a commentary of the Bible books of Revelation and Ezekiel and The Songs of Solomon. On its Publishers page the book was called the "Posthumous Works of Pastor Russell." Such a book and religious attitude tended to establish a religious sect centered around a man" [pg 347]
Dan
Okay, nobody cares about this. That's okay.
Here is the answer:
Qualified to Be Ministers published in 1967, by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society had this to say about the Association:
"Such a corporation came into legal existence February 23, 1909, and was named People's Pulpit Association. Thirty years later, in 1939, the name was changed to its present one, Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, Inc." [pg. 309]
So there you have it. This People's Pulpit association which according to the WT society "tended to establish a religious sect centered around a man" was in fact the same corporation that is around today. Except now they "establish a religious sect" centered around an organization. Par for the course, I guess.
Okay, I'll go away now.
Dan
I care!
Peoples pulpit was an old publishing arm of the org about a thousand years ago.Its significance in WT lore today is that it was NOT the Watchtower.THe WT, being Gods channel of truth, has to be kept clean from accusation of false prophecy and, sometimes the Peoples Pulpit is blamed for past errors. The pulpit org is hardly mentioned except in connection with a book called "The Finished Mystery", 1917, undoubtedly one of the most outrageous books ever concieved, but then Rutherford wasnt a charismatic writer and prophet like Russell, Rutherford was an organization man and built Gods Org.
DanB:
Thanks for providing this info. However, as you can see, it's not getting the attention it deserves, probably due to not enough info in your initial post. Folks who checked it out aren't coming back.
HOWEVER, any who come back and read this should take the time to read pages 345-9 of "God's Kingdom of a Thousand Years", since this is just one more example how the Writing Dept misleads/deceives JW readers, whom they know never verify anything they write, by using carefully selected verbiage.
Pointing out that "FM" was publshed by "PPA", while all "positive" comments refer to "WBTS", serves only to mislead ignorant JWs to assume that "PPA" was somehow controlled in 1917 by those BS who later split off, and of course, are already labeled as "the evil slave class".
Such deception is outrageous, since the truth of the matter is that Rutherford had "FM" secretly written and printed outside of Bethel, without the knowledge of the 4 Directors who he threw off the Board the very same day he released "FM" to Bethel.
There's no doubt that the verbiage on these pages was deliberately selected to deceive and mislead JW readers.
PS: Just FYI for readers- PPA was the original corporate name of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc., established in 1909, when the Borg moved from Pittsburgh to Brooklyn.
Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society was the original corporate name of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, Inc., established in Pittsburgh in 1884. (unincorporated since 1881)
Dan, I see you've been visiting www.food4jws.org, huh? lol .... Yes, I always found that train of thought misleading. The Society really does underestimate it's followers.
They did the same thing with Beth Sarim, saying it was built for Rutherford's use and then misquoting the "Salvation" book. However, when you went to the "Salvation" book, it told you in plain black and white why it was built, for the ancient prophets of old.
In fact, the "Proclaimers" book is filled with such misquotes and contradictions, however, the way the book was put together one does not see them. However, put the book in order and you'll see it.

I Still Believe ....
I think you have mis-read the quote, it is not as you say that "This People's Pulpit association which according to the WT society "tended to establish a religious sect centered around a man"", but it was A BOOK published by the said association. The same association later stopped distributing the book and by so doing stopped the establishing of a sect if one is to follow the line of reasoning.
