I have spent most of my life in Colorado. Love it, alwalys have. I have lived in Singapore, Arizona, New Mexico. I grew up on the East Coast. My parents are both from North Carolina.

I'm thinking somewhere in small town America. I would like to avoid tornado alley, but for some reason I am drawn to the Midwest. I love the change of seasons. I love history, old houses, big trees. I also am looking for a real estate market that is not so inflated.

    Any ideas?

Stillwater, Minnesota is close to where I live. Is is very historic -- being Minnesota's first city, it overlooks the beautiful St. Croix River (on the Wisconsin border), and has many book and antique stores.

Some of the real estate there is a bit pricey, but has come down with the deflation in home values.

    Anyhow, here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillwater,_Minnesota

sounds like you would love Wilmington NC, not too big but lots of history and fun things to do around there. No major tornadoes and not huge snow storms.

Hi Wings , You should try the little town I live in . Geneseo, IL. population 7,000

Midwest ,beautiful maple trees , good housing market, small town atmosphere includes ice cream socials in the city park during the summers , Fathers Day parade that lasts over an hour and ends with farmers in their tractors . The bank teller knows your name , the old guys in town meet every morning at the donut shop to gossip . You can walk the streets after dark and not feel afraid .

My husband has lived here all his life . I am ready for a change , waiting to see where the kids will choose to settle .Our oldest .son is moving to Colorado in March . I would love to be able to move out there also .

Thanks Gopher, I have never been to Minnesota, I have however crused through it on the map and realestate.com. Stillwater, I'll check it out.

Burger Time, my dad is from little Washington, and my mom from Greensboro. My Grandfather had a beach house in Beauford, right on the bay. It got wiped out twice from hurricaines. I would love to live on the coast, but the weather can be so severe. Do you live in a hurricane prone area?

St Louis Mo is supposed to have some good housing values. Avoid the city per se... the Metro area is OK

If you dont need a job, most of Michigan IS small towns and there are some nice places to be found. Taxes are not bad for the midwest.

I like Oklahoma...lots of work around and moderate real estate costs. The local sales taxes on EVERYTHING bite...

    Wings and TM,

I have found Wikipedia to be most helpful in describing and locating a city.

We are from Utah and Colorado. We have been in TN for 12 years now and we love it. I would take tornados over earthquakes ant day of the week. Before we moved a year ago we were very near where last week's tornados tore through. But there is a very beautiful little town named Carthage in Smith County. It is surrounded by the TN version of mountians and is flanked by the Cumberland River. Although tornados have come close, they haven't hit Carthage since we've lived here. We lived there for a year in a sweet older home on a tree-lined street. It is very old Americana and full of history.
