SLH: What you've just described represents about 3% of the Aboriginal population. Most are hard working, decent people that aren't any different than you or I. That's me talking from personal experience.

Brinjen, friends of mine have worked in outback communities as nurses, teachers and miners all in various places throughout WA and the NT. All have told me many tales of the rampant alcohol abuse throughout aboriginal communities where even teenage boys will rape and assault their grandmothers. The recent case of 10 guys going through a young girl in local authority care was not just shocking, it was sad to learn that the girl was sexualised from the age of 7 and was regularly offering herself in return for cigarettes.

My closest friend works in the department of criminal justice for the WA state and the proportion of the custodial population in WA that is Aboriginal is nearly 3 times the proportion in the general population.

Look, I understand the great injustice that was done and I in no way condone the obviously rascist policies of the past BUT it grinds on my nerves that there is a two tier legal system where Aboriginals are given far greater leeway to commit crime and unsociable behaviour just because of their so called "culture" and colour of their skin. People who don't want to work should not expect to be kept by those of us that are socially responsible; there is no excuse whatsoever for the lack of interest in achieving nothing more than a Homes West house and an alcohol habit.

The Aboriginal communitee doesn't do itself any favours; The issues are not being addressed adequately within the community and this constantly plays out in the media in the sort of cases we have seen recently.

Sorry is just a word, and from this governments perspective a good way to hopefully start down a new road (or at least appear that they intend to). As I'm deeply cynical I'm afraid it will change nothing, but today was so electric, I do like to have hope. Either way, there is nothing wrong with the big, united-floor symbol that todays message was. If it's the start of something new, fantastic, if it's not, at least it's done.
