Alternative energy sources are still not viable for wide use in the immediate near future and I doubt anything will effectively replace oil in a cost efficient matter in the near future.

Unfortunately for America, it is the country most dependant on oil, and is not self-sufficient as far as it is concerned. America is likely trying to bleed the oil supply from elsewhere in the world, so that its own supply can bridge the gap between a future major world oil crisis and the economic viability and widespread use of alternative fuels.

It is selfish, but definitely a wise thing to be doing if you are looking out for your own economic interests. America gets relatively little of its oil from the middle-east, but nonetheless, it is still significant in buying time for new fuel technologies and infrastructure to develope.

In the end, like everything it is about money. Until the price of oil rises to make alternatives cost effective, oil will drive the economy.

Well, they are going to have to find something Path. Not for terrorist reasons, but because theres a thing called greenhouse kicking in.

I think its 2 thirds of the energy we currently use is wasted. We need to find more efficient ways of burning fossil fuels and use that technology in concert with growing alternative energy sources.

Great post and replies from all. A quick and simple way to begin cutting our dependency on oil is to increase vehicle fuel economy by about 7-10%. This would cut our dependency by VOLUMES. Japanese automakers are far ahead of us in this regard. The technology exists, why not implement it? Also, 70% of vehicles manufactured in the USA are either Pick-ups, SUV's, or Minivans. They are exempt from normal passenger car fuel economy standards. Do we REALLY need such gas-guzzling vehicles? Many are simply status symbols. Do you really think that a Lexus, or Mercedes 4X4 is going OFF-ROAD?

Of course, if we do that, then the oil barons in this country will suffer too.

We lag terribly behind in the category of oil reserves. This should be a priority for the foreseeable future.

As to bin Laden, the Taliban, and the Northern Alliance, they have truly shot themselves and Afghanistan in the foot. The continued civil war there forced foreign oil conglomerates to halt production on a pipeline through the country. The transit fees to get that oil to the Persian Gulf for export would have brought hundreds of millions of dollars into Afghanistan each year. Hows that for putting ya head up ya azz? LOL

It is now rumored that the proposed pipeline may run OUTSIDE of Afghanistan along the border of-get this-IRAN among others.

OPEC? I think they are trying hard not to piss us off by taking advantage of the unrest in the region.

Oh yeah, Dont they know it. All that Green-house pseudo science they come up with tells me where their priorities are: $$$.

Can't say I give a shit for them really!
