    Good News – Alternative Energy

While on the subject, we could already start to reduce and eventually eliminate oil, at least to the point where we would only need to use our own resources and may buy oil from Mexico and Russia.

Solar: While seemingly forgotten, this is still a growing industry. Solar assist panels for homes are still selling. Modern units are functional in northern parallels up to Seattle. They are good for hot water, and can be designed to store DC batteries for household lighting. The downside is that Solar often only reduces natural gas use and not electrical. But, by using it for lighting, this would add to the overall reduction.

Wind: Wind generation is VERY exciting. Even my conservative radical Republican, Rush Limbaugh loving, capitalistic, kill the environment attitude welcomes Wind generation. The new generators being installed as we speak provide an output of 1 Megawatt. A large generation field in Iowa now has 1,000 wind generators. They run from 5 mph up to 50 mph winds. So, it takes little to keep them going. They are cheap, clean, and inexpensive to operate and maintain.

Fusion: Not there yet. Still being worked on. But forget it in the short term.

Alaskan Oil: Contrary to popular tree hugging environmentalists, Alaskan oil pipelines have not caused any negative environmental impacts. So, a few more wells and maybe a few more lines will not be a problem. Certainly, in the short term this will take pressure off of Arabian oil prices and most of all purchases can be reduced.

Hydrogen: Some years ago the Japanese finally made a breakthrough in developing a catalyst to make Hydrogen burn safe, and applied this to automobiles. If this technology is still being developed, then maybe this will be one more way to offset the need for oil, and improve the environment – as hydrogen outputs clean water vapor. The cost and logistics of extracting hydrogen from the ocean is still an obstacle. However, the good news is that this can be coupled with nuclear plants which produce hydrogen. The challenge is to find a way to de-ionized hydrogen produced in nuke plants.

Electric Cars: Saturn now produces and markets an electric car in the USA. If Americans could buy at least one Saturn car, they could reduce oil consumption for local use, which burns most of the oil, and save their gas-guzzlers for longer road trips.

Conservation: This is a Liberal Word in my vocabulary, and is NOT an alternative energy source. But my deeply conservative heart would be willing to compromise and use more public transportation, especially electric light rail or electric busses and save some oil. Conservation would at least help in reducing some of the dependence on oil and contribute to the overall plan.

Ethanol : This is a great corn product, but has to have some oil product used for today'’ cars. BUT, with improved technology, we could make immediate reduction in oil by about 20%. And, corn is renewable. The USA is by far the world largest corn producer. Many farmers now idle could increase corn production, and thereby increase supplies, while keeping prices stable.

Co-Gen: This is a great way to eliminate our garbage and reduce landfill needed for trash. Also, with today’s clean technology, Co-Gen plants produce almost no pollutants. Co-Gen could be used in greater amounts to help take oil power plants off-line and reduce our demand for oil even more.

Coal: Coal produces dirty stuff among which it blows out large amounts of Alpha radiation. You cannot co-locate a nuke plant next to a coal plant as it will set off the nuke alarms. But, again, with the clean air technology developed by my old company, Bechtel Power Corporation in San Francisco, even coal plants can be made much more environmentally safe – and – we have so much coal in reserves that we could become energy independent for the next 1,000 years.

Nuclear: Clean, no pollutants, efficient, and we have enough raw uranium in the USA – the world’s largest supply – to make ourselves totally energy independent for yet another 1,000 years --- AND --- using our Breeder program stretch this out to 10,000 years!

The above are just some obvious methods. I imagine there are other I have not mentioned. BUT --- We Can do it!!! So, if a cleaner environment was not enough motive, then by all means independence from OPEC – Arabian oil is yet another strong motive to get out from slavery to people who would love to see us gone. – Amazing

I agree with all of that apart from the last one (probably the first time I've disagreed with one of your posts Amazing )

My argument against nuclear energy consists of names of sites:

    Chernobyl, 3-mile-island, Sellafield

At the moment our best solution to problem of nuclear waste seems to be "bury it and forget about it". Aargh !

You might be interested in some anomalous energy devices.

There are ongoing controversies about cavitation pumps producing
more energy than is inputed. This is related to the sonoluminescense
effect and water hammer. I'll try to find the web sites. This is
not some cheap joke with measurement errors - this subject has
been investigated and debated for some years without resolution.

I'm investigating the Meyer Cell and may try to build one to
see if the claims about it are true (HV/low current electrolysis).
Supposedly, patent examiners refused to believe the device worked
and were astounded at a demonstration.

You forgot wood technology. After all, trees grow back. They are a renewable resource.

Hi Simon: Thanks for the feedback. Maybe the following will help:

Chernobyl: I have read and studied the Chernobyl reports as part of my engineering activities in nuclear. Comparing Chernobyl to safety concerns is like saying airplane are unsafe because a few terrorists rammed them into the World Trade Center. The Chernobyl catastrophy was a crime committed by those who abused their authoprity to run uneeded tests, and disabled ALL safety systems. The Soviet government executed them criminals. Also, the old Soviet styled reactors like Chernobyl have been taken off line and are closed for decommissioning. These designs are no where near as safe or similar as American, British, Canadian, French, Japanese and German design. The best comparison I can make is that the Soviet design is like trying to travel on the Los Angeles Freeway, or the London M-1 in rush hour with a go-cart. Whereas American and British designs are like driving in the same traffic in a nice armored tank. No comparison.

Three Mile Island: This is the "Worst Case" scenario for an American design. Several things were learned and used to safeguard the rest of the nation's plants, including British, French, German, Canadian, and Japanese plants. But, given this worst case scenario, TMI still safely shut down once the operators let it -- and the reactor did have some partial core melt. The off-site dose in the 3 mile zone was equivalent to 3 dental x-rays --- by comparison, our various government buildings, like the Senate office building stone construction does that much each day. When you walk outside you get cosmic Gamma and some X-Ray. If you fly, you get more radiation in a one or two hour flight than a nuclear plant worker will get in his entire life at the plant.

Sellafield: Mmmmmm ... I plead ignorance on Sellafield. Can you post a link or tell me where I can quickly find this one on line.

You concluded, "At the moment our best solution to problem of nuclear waste seems to be "bury it and forget about it". Aargh!"

Most waste is stored at power plants, and not buried. But, when spent fuel is placed in casks, it is vitrified into glass and ceramic, and sealing in stainless steel, concrete, and then heavy armor steel. It is buried deep, about 1,500 feet down in basalt beds in New Mexico. It is safely stored. BUT ...

We need not do this. We can reprocess it, and use it in Breeders, like the ones the French are using, and simply burn it until nothing is left. God love the French - so pragmatic, even if they are so mean and bigoted toward Americans. LOL

I look forward to looking at Sellafield and seeing if I missed anything - and will adjust my views if needed. Thanks. - Amazing

Hi Cyg: Ahhhh ... wood ... yes. Although we have to also apply clean technology here too. Wood buring releases Alpha radiation as does coal, but not as great a quantity. You can still peg a Geiger-Counter inside your home fireplace. Try it - it is fun!

But yes, wood can be efficiently used, and so should be added to my list. Kill another tree for Jesus! - just kidding

I guess I was trying to say that while the theory of nuclear energy is safe the practice, particularly if something goes wrong, can be dreadful.

Sellafield is constantly in the news in the UK for safety fears. There have been numerous studies relating to the high ratio of lukemia in the nearby communities and the much higher than normal levels of radiation that the government says is "naturally occuring" (yeah, right... we trust you Mr Grinning Baffoon Blair)

The final straw was a fuel reprocessing plant which it seemed had hit upon the idea of faking test and safety results instead of actually being safe as a good way to do business. The government have given them a license to operate anyway.

I don't have URLs to the story - this is a patchy account of what has been in the news but if I come accross one I will post it.

    Amazing,

Modern wood-fueled appliances near the 80-90% effiency range these days. The Hearth Products Association has been in a feud with EPA for years regarding the reliability and effiency of modern hearth products with regards to emissions and air-pollution. The fact is that burning wood with efficient units is essentially the same as allowing dead wood to decompose in its natural environment (releasing CO2 into the atmosphere). Some states, such as Oregon and Minnesota, have outlawed open-hearth fireplaces -- with good reason! But there are available many hearth products that greatly minimize air pollution and actually serve as a benefit for the environment.

Wood fuel is our only real renewable resource. The days of grandpa choking down his old steel laundry stove and making all his neighbors choke on wood smoke is (nearly!) over.

For anyone interested in real sustainability issues I encourage you to look at www.permaculture.co.uk and their earth repair catalogue, there you will see the facts and not the fiction.

Permaculture in a nutshell is living harmoniously with natures pattern.

As far as your suggestions go, some of them are cool, some are downright awful, but I'm not about to enter upon a lengthy debate on the pro's and con's of each here as there is far too much room for disagreement on the issues concerned.

PS Search engine google try: 'Centre for alternative technology wales uk', I'm up there for a meeting on the environment in two weeks on alternative energies.

Hi Celtic: I enjoy discussion and some debate. But when allegations of fiction are made without any substantive support, I get suspecious ... and it starts to smell like conspiracy theories.

yes, we can do much to work with nature, improve efficiency, and reduce pollutants. I am all for that. But we also do ourselves a diservice IF we believe that poppy-cock trash propaganda about the good resources, such as nuclear power. I have found more lies and half-truths in these anti-nuclear claims than you can imagine.

So, please provide some solid references, and let's avoid the claims of fiction, conspiracy, or other feautres that can cloud wholesome discussion, and where I need to adjust views, I will. - Amazing
