That was Proctor and Gamble - parent company to many other companies.

This was a wide-spread rumour, not just amongst JW's. Here's the Snopes Report: http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/procter.asp

I don't think I remember Life cereal being specifically identified but I *do* remember the lecithin concerns. Lecithin and it's derivitives made half the foods we ate inappropriate.

I remember the lecithin scare. My mom thought that lecithin was a blood product and would read labels like crazy. Some candy bars had lecithin in them so she actually called the Mars company (they make Snickers, et al) and asked if they used a blood-based lecithin. The guy on the phone couldn't stop laughing long enough to answer her question, so she got mad and hung up. From that time on, she wouldn't let us buy any M&M/Mars products out of pride rather than a fear of blood!

I do believe Colgate had a cluster of stars on them and still does on the box. It was supposed to be a sign of their belief in the occult or something. Maybe a cluster of stars is just a cluster of stars, ya think?

I do know that one of the JWs in my congregation grew orchids and the elders made her give them up because their food is actually a blood product. I also remember when dog and cat food had blood meal in it and we were told to inspect all pet food labels before buying. I wonder if blood products are included in the ever-so-vague "meat byproducts" listed on the labels?

LOL....I have never heard that before! That's just crazy! Can't you see an article in the paper, "JW's get df'd for eating Life Cereal"

The guy on the phone couldn't stop laughing long enough to answer her question, so she got mad and hung up.

I probably would have had the same reaction that guy did....Too funny!!!

That is why I call them witlesses. Their rules are based on the stupidest beliefs. Lecithin comes from soy, not blood, and so is safe (it used to come from eggs). Anything with lecithin is OK to eat (it is, in fact, one of the few soy products that I still trust).

Anything that has Satanic symbols on the package as a grounds to be banned is another stupid rule. Just about anything can be viewed as satanic. Many of them use logos in the shapes of symbols that have been used in some pagan worship at one time or another, and hence would be banned. I never paid any attention to those logos and symbols, since I know that even the straight line has been used in some pagan worship at some time, and there are straight lines everywhere.

I did, however, hear about the Lucky Charms. People in my congregation could eat them, but under the condition that they be called "Fortunate Figures". That I could never figure out, since Lucky Charms is a trademarked brand name and not a generic term. I always thought it ridiculous that we could not use trademarked brand names to refer to the product with the license to that trademark. I have heard of congregations that banned consumption of the cereal because of the shapes of the pieces. Which is absurd, since once you chew and digest it, none of those pagan, demonic shapes will still be there.

The Life Cereal thing must've been regional. I was talking to one of my disfellowshipped cousins last night, and she remembered the ban. We both grew up in Western Central Pennsylvania. Wizard, were you serious about calling Lucky Charms Fortunate Figures or was that a joke? You never know, because the wierdness that comes out of the JW's is profound. There are many things that have pagan origins: names of the days of the week and months of the year, use of lipstick, etc. I wonder how the WTB&TS justifies the use of those common items.

Oh my gosh!! I remember the Life Cereal rumor. Also, in the 80's, there was a rumor about some type of bacon that contained blood. I think the elders said it was used as some kind of preservative. It was a huge topic for discussion during field service. Was it Sizzlean? Does anyone remember this?

To 38 Years: I don't remember the bacon rumor. Did you live in PA?

The Colgate thing with the stars and the moon - That was Proctor and Gamble and their company logo, that was big news among JWs when I was growing up - I can still see my mom studying all the labels of cleaning products she'd buy, carefully avoiding P & G items.

They allegedly won a large $$ settlement against Amway for their involvement in this 'satanic cult' rumor.

Yeah, I heard about the lecithen thing. I also was told not burn incense because pagans used it. But hell, so did the Israelites. I didn't give into that pressure. But there was to come a dark time later in my life when I caved into pressure over "demonized" items from my mother's estate. God, I'd love to go kick some people squarely in the a$$.
