The general consensus is that homo sapiens originated in the African Savana about 200,000 BP
They lived as hunter gatherers untill around 10,000 years ago when some of them lived as nomadic groups and started farming and working with metals.

I don't subscribe to the Out Of Africa theory too much myself.

"The Science of God" by Gerald L. Schroeder is an excellent read that puts out some pretty interesting thoughts on pre-Adamic hominids.
According to him, about 5,000 - 6,000 years ago (around the time of the Biblical Adam) and interestingly, about the same time a cuneiform writing developed,
a man (Adam) was infused with the neshama of life and he was changed from a man into a human. The other "men" in existence at that time did not possess
this spirit of God, so were not in the strictest sense human. The neshama instilled in humans knowledge of a spirituality that transcends the individual.
It's really a fascinating read and gives an interesting perspective on the correlation of science and religion.
I have a broader view of "human" than that narrow qualification.
I think the Neanderthals were human also.
