I like the bubblegum music from the late 1960s and early 1970s for this purpose. Songs like Aquarius by the Fifth Dimension really fit the bill. Also, many of those one- and two-hit wonders from that time period. There is a lot to be said about Super Hits of the 70s Vols 1-4 (though I have and recommend all 25 volumes). And, if you find a few compilations in the 1960s, you will find those songs that made you feel good in the late 1960s.
If you have Napster, you can cheat on this. They have Billboard listings of all songs that are available on that site, broken down by season and year. If you really want to recapture those memories, you might wish to hit this and browse Summer or Fall of 1967 or Spring/Summer of 1969. Then you can get crazy and download all the songs you want, and not pay for them until you want to burn a CD or export them (then, be prepared to pay for them in bulk: a 50 song package costs $40, compared to 99 cents per song individually). You can pick the year and season, and fill in those lost hits that you thought were forever lost.
