I guess we should mention Leonardo Da Vinci as well, since he made drawings of "helicopters" and other flying contraptions.
Richard Morgan suggests the idea of downloading your consciousness into different 'shells' I know Iain M Banks has suggested something similar in the culture novels.
I quite like the idea of being able to do that, Richard Morgan quite often uses the idea of being able to have certain abilities hardwired into your shell. I think I'll have the motoGP rider plug-in for a start.
