I am with you. I don't know if the documentary you saw was the same one I saw, but it was disturbing. Also, there was nothing amusing about it. The survivors cried from the deep anguish in their hearts. I would never make light of their pain. Those who told of family that left to go to Guyana but never returned was heartrending.

We saw this here in the uk not long ago. It cemented to me how dangerous blind obedience is. Also, how perfectly intelligent people can be fooled and mesmerized. I can see how I was indeed fooled and mesmerized by the WTS.

Dear Mouthy, I don't know if you saw the same one I saw. But the one I saw was on PBS some time back. And what impressed me was the Lady that lived with her 2 kids at the safe house in the city. She was in a position where she could have taken her kids and left when she heard what happened. But she was bound to the group mentally so she slit her kids throats and the took her own life. I know some witnesses who appear to have the same mentality. Let us pray for them to wake up! The other thing that really impressed me was when Congressman Ryan and his associates were gunned down as they boarded the plane. It reminded me so much of how when ones wants to leave the organization he gets "gunned down" on his way out in a spiritual sense (according to them anyway). For a long time I fought against the idea that JWs are a cult. I no longer fight the idea, because it's true. If they wasn't a cult, members would have the true freedom that Christ said his followers would have at John 8:32 seek2find

I remember reading about this when it happened. But I was a Bethelite at the time and it really disturbed me, because I could see the similarities with the watchtower. The beginning of the end!

Hi Again mouthy, Just to clarify, the one i saw didn't show her slit the kids throats it just showed a reenactment of when the bodies were found and told what had happened. But the point was still very horrifying. They said the Woman was one of Jim Jones most devout followers. That's why she was entrusted with the management of the House. It was where new members came when they first came to the country. seek2find

It made me conscious of the potential danger of being in any cult, where complete obedience is required.
It cemented to me how dangerous blind obedience is. Also, how perfectly intelligent people can be fooled and mesmerized. I can see how I was indeed fooled and mesmerized by the WTS.
I know some witnesses who appear to have the same mentality.
One day in field service, a "sister" told the rest of us in the car group, "I believe we should be so obedient that if the governing body asked me to murder someone, I should do it. And I would do it." I said, "The governing body would never ask us to do anything like that!" She responded, and others murmured their agreement: "All I'm saying is that we should do it if they ever did ask such a thing." The incident scared the wits out of me. Later, I was able to connect it with a WT study article on "obedience to the F&D slave" that offered no cautionary advice about going too far with one's "obedience."
