Theocratic Warfare in Action: There are no layoffs at Bethel!

Well, I called the Society again. This is part of a small informal campaign to call the headquarters on or around the first day of each month. I asked about the layoffs at Bethel. I was transferred to the Service department. I was told there were no layoffs at Bethel! Of course, I inquired further and was told this is because the workers aren't paid. Some are being reassigned to other places where they are needed. I asked if they are receiving any kind of severance package. He said that was private information. When I asked if they have any public statements about this, I was told that I would have to call the office of public information. I pointed out that was the number I called. He didn't offer to transfer me. He said I would have to call them back.

On the second phone call I was told that they haven't made any public statements about this. I asked if the workers are given any kind of severance package or support when they are asked to leave. He said he wouldn't feel comfortable giving out that information. I said that was fine. I would just have to do my research elsewhere.

It felt like I really hit some raw nerves with my questions. When I had called on earlier occasions they were pretty nice and polite, but not this time. I would love to know what kind of effect these layoffs are having on the workers.

Their number is (718) 560-5000, if anyone else wants to call (I don't think they answer that number on the weekend). I don't really like making these kinds of phone calls, but they get easier every time. They can shun me if they want, but this is a way for me to get them to listen to what I have to say. This little campaign may not ever get very big, but at least the opportunity is available if somebody wants to be part of a
    collaborative effort.

Can you imagine what a day in the Service Department must be like?

1974 must seem like paradise compared to 2008.

This is real '1984' Orwell doublespeak. Were not throwing you out were reassigning you. Your reassigned to the unemployment line, "be warm, be well feed brother." I wish they would reassign the Governing Body to a clean up after the elephants detail at the zoo.

Technically he's right. Perhaps you should've asked, "Have you been throwing your longtime slaves volunteers out to the streets just so you could save on the bottom line?"

I'm not big on campaigns but this one is interesting... call them every day regarding this matter - thousands of phone calls every day. Quite interesting.

No wonder the operator was rude - she was probably thinking she was next!

i personally don't think i could keep my cool on the phone calls like you have, so i have to applaud you.

i may have mentioned this earlier, but pretend you're a journalist, take a name from any newspaper, and say you're following up on a story and have interviewed ex-watchtower workers (keep the lingo like you're an outsider), and actually pretend you talked to someone who got three months living expenses and after that they have no insurance benefits or work and are having a very hard time in the job market b/c of their lack of skills since they worked in a specific department.....i'd say the couple kicked out requested not to reveal what department they were in (journalistic integrity), and you're calling to give them a chance to comment on the regard for the publication.

have a run date (when the piece will publish), in mind and call it a run date. the lead time for newspapers could be up to about two months, for magazines four to six months....lead time is when your editor needs the article by to make sure it runs.

hit them with the harder questions, b/c they're going to be a lot nicer if they truly believe you're a reporter, but when hitting with the hard questions, pretend you're fumbling through notes.

just some options you may want to do or not....but they might actually give an answer or if they say 'no comment', let them know that you'll include that in the article that the watchtower society was contacted but refused to comment.

    jolly good time.

I suspect they talk to enough reporters that they can spot a phony. What's Plan B look like?
