Hello all, been a while since I last posted.
Well, my boss fired me 2 months ago because my wife got hurt while I was at work and took off to see about her condition.
What gets me is why my former boss has a problem with my wife as some of you already well know that she's a double amputee (no legs). She even asked me when we were dating 2 years ago, "Of all the women available in this town, why are you dating a woman in a wheelchair?" (WTF?)
Not only that she has a problem with my psoriasis as well, she would from time to time embarrass me about it in front of my co-workers and customers where I worked.
Also, she would cut my hours if I am not up to snuff on certain situations that would meet to her satisfaction. For example, she tried to call me one time last year when my wife and I was out of the house all day and didn't come up until late in the evening before 10 PM. My wife finds on the answering machine that she called several times in the late morning hours to early/late afternoon wanting me to come in because an employee called in.
So the next day I see she changed the schedule whereas it was 37.5 hours to 30.5 hours, killing my 7 hrs for the work week schedule. I asked her why she changed it and she said I never called her back after leaving a message and she figured I didn't need those hours. Plus it was already late, so my wife and I didn't bother to call back as she goes to bed every night at 8 PM in order to get up at 4 AM for work.
Anyway, the last straw for her 2 months ago was that my wife went out to check the mail and as she turned to leave the mailbox, the sun hit her glasses, blinding her (plus she had floaters in her eyes which made things worse, but working on to have surgery to bleed those out), she ran over a curb and flipped her off her wheelchair. She landed on her left arm, scrapping it, bruising it, popped her shoulder off her socket (then later she had an MRI scan done and discovered she also has a broken rotor cuff).
A customer recognized my wife on her way to my work station to get some fountain pop, she called 911 on her cell and ran in to tell me my wife is laying on the street 3 blocks away. So my co-worker tells me to take off and I did.
By the time I got there, 2 squad cars and an ambulance was already there and in the process in lifting her back on her electric wheelchair.
Wife was surprised to see me and asked me how I knew what happened to her and explained about the customer telling me.
She signed the waiver for the ambulance service and instead took her to the hospital myself. Early examination didn't detect her broken rotor cuff until the MRI weeks later when she wasn't getting any better.
Boss gets pissed off that I took off for an family emergency so she fires me for it. Leaving a write up that states that I didn't clock out when I left.
I filed with EEOC in which they sent a copy of the charge to the Civil Rights Commission. So it's still pending.
Job searches, several interviews have proven to be fruitless and I had to file for unemployment, welfare, food stamps and trying to see if I can also draw SSI, so I have an appointment for that. They prolly will deny me for it, so I will appeal and go to court for it.
I don't like to file for these things as some of you well know I am too prideful for this sort of thing and I feel embarrassed and ashamed to ask for help. I hate the feeling of helplessness.
Keep me in your prayers folks. My wife and I will need it badly. Will keep you all posted.
Thanks
Yiz

Yiz,
Sorry about all that you and your wife are going through right now. I too have had problems with the employment situation in this area. If you ever need to talk, I will PM you how to get ahold of me.

I think the boss is asking for a lawsuit, since it is illegal to discriminate against people for handicaps like this. And to fire someone for a family crisis is as illegal as for failure to show up for work on account of jury duty.
That aside, it is getting more difficult these days to find a decent job. There are work-at-home jobs, along with the scams that make finding the legitimate ones next to impossible. Finding a job online is as difficult as the old fashioned approach, except the resumes are easier to send and there is less driving around (the "Experience In This Field" requirement shuts out anyone that is trying to break into a career). And, starting one's own business is needlessly difficult because of all the regulators that you did not elect into power. They make the rules, they interpret the rules, and they come in with the SWAT teams to enforce the rules.
About the only thing is that one should never view this as an opportunity to pioneer, if active as a Jehovah's Witless. They will hound people to do that. I know of one person that lost his job, and was recruited immediately to regular pioneer. He exhausted his unemployment, and then had to find odd jobs to do. His financial situation was wretched, and he died destitute (and I didn't pay him even a penny to help support him). I am sure that, if he would have found another job instead of pioneering, he would have been reasonably well off financially.

Stay after those EEOC folks. Meanwhile, hows the job search going?
Did you file for Unemployment? Your ex boss will have to give a good reason to deny your claim... and if you draw UI that would weaken her case against you.

That story sucks. I am sorry.
Good luck to you. This is a bad time to be unemployed.
In the best of circumstances it takes weeks to get back on track. I hope something works out soon.

I'm so sorry. That's why I believe in self-employment. At least the boss won't fire you. Maybe you can create some work by thinking of all your skills, and making up a new service that you could provide based on your skills.

yiz...haven't heard from you in a while. I didn't know you were married either. Congrats on that, and hope things get better for you and your wife. I had to take a leave of absence from work, and am glad I have my children around me, or else.
Keep looking. Keep your head up.
